摘要： A servo-controlled fuel injector (10) is provided which includes a leakage limiting valve device (12) for limiting the quantity of high pressure fuel available for leakage into the combustion chamber in the event the closed nozzle valve element (32) fails to sealingly engage its seat between injection events. The servo-controlled injector includes a control volume (38) positioned adjacent an outer end of the nozzle valve element, a control volume charge circuit (40) for supplying fuel to the control volume, a drain circuit (42) for draining fuel from the control volume to a low pressure drain and an injection control valve (46) positioned along the drain circuit for controlling the flow through the drain circuit so as to cause reciprocal movement of the nozzle valve element (32). The leakage limiting valve (12) is integrated into the injector body (14) and positioned along a fuel transfer passage to block the flow of fuel to a nozzle cavity (24) between injection events.

摘要： A system (10) for protecting one or more drivetrain components (18, 22, 24) from excessive inertial torque includes an automated clutch (16) disposed between an internal combustion engine (14) ans a transmission (18) coupled thereto, wherein the automated clutch (16) is responsive to computer control. Under conditions wherein driveline acceleration exceeds an acceleration threshold, wherein the acceleration threshold preferably corresponds to the weakest of the drivetrain components (18, 22, 24), a control computer (12) is operable to actuate the automated clutch (16) to thereby electronically disengage the engine (14) from the transmission (18), and accordingly protect the various drivetrain components (18, 22, 24) from damage due to excessive engine inertial torque. In an alternate embodiment, a control computer (12) is operable to compute or otherwise estimate engine inertial torque and actuate the automated clutch (16) as just described if/when the engine inertial torque exceeds a torque threshold corresponding to an input tor ue capacity of one or more of the drivetrain components (18, 22, 24).

摘要： A fuel system includes an electronically controllable high pressure fuel pump (22) operable to supply high pressure fuel from a lower pressure fuel source to a high pressure fuel collection chamber (34) having a pressure sensor (72). The fuel collection chamber feeds an electronically controllable valve (38) operable to dispense the high pressure fuel to a fuel distribution unit. A control computer (58) is provided for controlling the high pressure fuel pump and valve in response to requested fueling, engine speed and fuel pressure provided by the pressure sensor. In a first limp home mode, the system is operable to drive the fuel pump as a function of fuel pressure and commanded fueling if abnormal operation of the high pressure fuel pump is detected. In a second limp home mode, the system is operable to drive the fuel pump with a predicted fuel pump command based on the fuel command and engine speed, if abnormal operation of the pressure sensor is detected.

摘要： A premixed-charge compression-ignition engine and control system (10) is provided which effectively initiates combustion by compression-ignition and maintains stable combustion while achieving extremely low oxides of nitrogen emissions, good overall efficiency and acceptable combustion noise and cylinder pressures. The present engine and control system (10) effectively control the combustion history, that is, the time at which combustion occurs, the rate of combustion, the duration of combustion and/or the completeness of combustion, by controlling the operation of certain control variables providing temperature control, pressure control, control of the mixture's autoignition properties and equivalence ratio control. The combustion control system (10) provide active feedback control of the combustion event and includes a sensor, e.g. pressure sensor (16), for detecting an engine operating condition indicative of the combustion history, e.g. the start of combustion, and generating an associated engine operation condition signal (18).

摘要： An engine cylinder piston connecting rod subassembly, for use in an engine, includes a piston (53), a piston pin (52) and a connecting rod (51). The connecting rod has a piston end portion with a piston pin bore (62). The piston pin is inserted through the piston pin bore and oppositely disposed portions of the piston, for securing the piston and the connecting rod together. Opposite ends of the piston pin bore are machined or profiled with relief portions (60, 61), to allow for piston pin deflection and thereby maximize the load carrying capacity, by providing a greater area of contact. The relief portions can be a curved surface (65) machined as part of the bore, or a plurality of end-to-end angled frustoconical surfaces (66a, 66b, 66c). The relief portions are shaped to correspond to the shape of the corresponding piston pin when under load during normal engine operation.
