摘要： A tunable hybrid laser (300, 400) has a gain chip (302, 402) and a wavelength selection chip (304, 404). The wavelength selection chip (304, 404) includes a wavelength selective loop reflector (608). The wavelength selective loop reflector (608) is configured to receive the amplified lightwave from the gain chip (302, 402). The wavelength selective loop reflector (608) includes a single optical coupler (610) and a micro-ring resonator (MMR) (612). The single optical coupler (610) splits the amplified lightwave and provides portions thereof to different branches of the MRR (612). The MRR (612) permits selection of a desired wavelength and reflects the portions of the amplified lightwave at the desired wavelength back to the single optical coupler (610), which combines the portions of the amplified lightwave at the desired wavelength to generate a reflection lightwave and a transmission lightwave. The reflection lightwave is returned to the gain chip (302, 402) to form the external cavity and the transmission lightwave is output from the tunable hybrid laser (300, 400).

摘要： Embodiments of an optical modulator device are described. An example optical modulator includes a ridge laser configured to emit light, a ridge waveguide configured to transition between a transparent state and an absorbing state, and a waveguide tap formed between the ridge laser and the ridge waveguide. The waveguide tap is configured to optically couple a fraction of light generated in the ridge laser to the ridge waveguide. In the transparent state of the ridge waveguide, the ridge waveguide is configured to output the fraction of light for interference with light emitted from the ridge laser. In the absorbing state of the ridge waveguide, the ridge waveguide is configured to absorb the fraction of light. Depending upon whether the fraction of light is output from the ridge waveguide for interference, the output power of the laser seen at the far-field of the optical modulator can be modulated for data communications.

In some embodiments, the IC optical assemblies include a transmitter component to provide light output having a particular beam direction, and a transmitter driver component. The transmitter component includes a light source optically coupled to a plurality of waveguides, a plurality of gratings, and a plurality of phase tuners. The transmitter driver component causes a light provided by the light source to be centered at a particular wavelength and a particular phase to be induced by each phase tuner of the plurality of phase tuners on a respective waveguide of the plurality of waveguides, in accordance with a feedback signal, to generate the light output having the particular beam direction.
