    • A high speed optical switch may include a plurality of pairs each having a length L π that may be connected in series. All switching may be accomplished in the high speed optical switch by discharging one arm in a pair (e.g. a single L π ) at a time. L π may refer to a guide length used to induce a relative π phase shift. Each of the plurality of pairs may have two arms with both arms being initially charged. If both arms in any give pair have the same state, (e.g. either charged, uncharged, or charging) a "1" may be transmitted through that pair. If the arms are in opposite states, (e.g. charged or uncharged) a π phase shift may be produced and a "0" may be transmitted through that pair. For example, a first pair in the series may be recharged while other pairs are using in switching.

    • Disclosed is a modulator arrangement for modulating an optical signal for use in an optical communications or data system comprising a laser for producing an optical signal of a selected wavelength, which signal is applied to an intensity modulator adapted to modulate the intensity of the signal in dependence on a respective drive voltage. The intensity modulator has two outputs, the output power of each output being monitored by a respective two photon absorption detector, the detector signals then being fed to a differential amplifier. The output of the differential amplifier is used to drive a feedback arrangement to a control electrode(s) of the intensity modulator.

    • A photonic processing module (100) comprises a high index-contrast waveguide device comprising a substrate (102), a first layer (104) disposed on the substrate having a first refractive index, and a relatively thin second layer (106) disposed on the first layer. The second layer has a second refractive index providing a high index-contrast with the first layer, and the device includes at least one thin-ridge waveguide element (108) formed in the second layer which supports a guided mode in a longitudinal direction. An optical input port (110) is configured to direct an input beam into a slab mode of the second layer, the beam being directed to propagate at a predetermined angle θ to the longitudinal direction of the thin-ridge waveguide element. The angle θ is associated with a resonant coupling between the slab mode of the second layer and the guided mode of the thin-ridge waveguide element. An output beam is thus generated when the input beam includes one or more optical components corresponding with the resonant coupling. An optical output port (112) is configured to receive the output beam.
