In one example, a method includes the steps of: providing an internal combustion engine which generates and exhaust flow stream and an expander which receives the exhaust flow stream to generate useful work; detecting that the internal combustion engine has been started; supplying power to a motor/generator to cause rotors within the expander to be in a static fixed position; sensing a temperature of a housing of the expander; discontinuing power to the motor/generator once the expander housing temperature sensor indicates that the housing has reached a predetermined temperature.

摘要： A supercharger assembly includes a supercharger in series with an engine that has a crankshaft and has an air intake manifold defining a plenum through which air flow is provided to the engine. A supercharger is upstream of the plenum in air flow to the engine and has a first rotor rotatable with a first shaft and a second rotor rotatable with a second shaft. The supercharger assembly also includes an electric motor-generator that is selectively alternately operable as a motor and as a generator, and a planetary gearing arrangement having a first member operatively connected to the electric motor-generator, a second member connectable to be rotated by the engine crankshaft, and a third member operatively connected for rotation with the first shaft. The supercharger assembly has only two selectively engageable torque-transmitting mechanisms and a control system configured to control the electric motor-generator and the torque-transmitting mechanisms.

A motor/generator is connected to power the expander to selectively provide power to and capture power from the expander. An expander controller is connected to control the motor/generator connection to the expander, and is configured to select between a passive mode, where exhaust passively moves through the expander, and an active mode, where the motor/generator powers the expander to actively draw exhaust from the exhaust manifold. In one example, the air intake and exhaust flows are controlled independently of the rotational speed of the power plant.

摘要： An exhaust gas energy recovery system includes an internal combustion engine, a volumetric fluid expander, and a water injection mechanism. The internal combustion engine includes an air inlet, at least one cylinder, and an exhaust gas outlet for conveying an exhaust gas stream at a first pressure. The volumetric fluid expander generates useful work at an output shaft by expanding the exhaust gas stream to a second pressure lower than the first pressure as the exhaust gas stream moves through the volumetric fluid expander. The water injection mechanism injects water into the system at a location between the air inlet of the engine and the expander to increase the volume of the exhaust received by the expander for increased power output at the expander.
