    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for engagement of and apparatus for controlling engagement of an impeller clutch which implement quick engagement of a torque converter apparatus having an independent oil passage type of impeller clutch.
      SOLUTION: A torque converter apparatus 30 includes a torque converter 2, an impeller clutch 3, an independent oil passage 4 for supplying a clutch engagement pressure to the impeller clutch 3, a T/C internal pressure supply oil passage 5 for supplying lubricating oil into the torque converter 2, a T/C internal pressure discharge oil passage 6 for discharging the lubricating oil from within the torque converter 2, a hydraulic circuit 7 for supplying the clutch engagement pressure and T/C internal pressure, and a control device 20 for controlling the torque converter apparatus 30 via the hydraulic circuit 7 according to detection signals from various sensors 21-25. When the control device 20 requests engagement, the hydraulic circuit 7 supplies the clutch engagement oil pressure to a clutch oil pressure chamber 3d via the independent oil passage 4 and reduces the internal pressure of the torque converter 2 acting as a back pressure via the T/C internal pressure discharge oil passage 6.
