    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve favorable main combustion during an air-fuel ratio switching period, so that torque shock is prevented.SOLUTION: A control device of an internal combustion engine switches the air-fuel ratio of in-cylinder gas from a lean first air-fuel ratio for normal operation to a rich second air-fuel ratio, and carries out intake air restriction during a switching period from the start t1 to the end t2 of the switching. A main injection M is performed at or around a compression top dead center, prior to the start of switching, and the main injection M and a first after injection A1 that results in incomplete combustion of injected fuel are performed after the end of switching. During the switching period, the main injection M is performed, and a second after injection A2 that results in incomplete combustion of injected fuel is performed at a time earlier than the first after injection A1.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for controlling a compression self-ignited internal combustion engine, adapted to reduce combustion noise as well as fluctuations in torque during switching from spark-ignited combustion to compression self-ignited combustion. SOLUTION: In accordance with information on an operational state of an internal combustion engine, a combustion mode switching discriminator 21 selects a compression self-ignited combustion mode if the engine is operating under the conditions that allow the compression self-ignited combustion. If the engine is operating under the conditions that do not allow the compression self-ignited combustion, the combustion mode switching discriminator 21 selects a spark-ignited combustion mode. Immediately after the combustion mode is switched from the spark-ignited combustion to the compression self-ignited combustion, a combustion mode switching corrector 28 outputs switching correction quantities with respect to operating quantities for the compression self-ignited combustion. The operating quantities for the compression self-ignited combustion are adjusted using the switching correction quantities that the combustion mode switching corrector 28 has output with respect to the operating quantities for the compression self-ignited combustion immediately after switching to the compression self-ignited combustion mode.
