    • PURPOSE: A water-cooled vertical engine, an outboard motor mounted with the water-cooled vertical engine, and the outboard motor are provided to properly execute temperature control of a cylinder head and a cylinder block, to minimize the number of coolant temperature sensors, and to surely detect overheating of the water-cooled vertical engine. CONSTITUTION: A water-cooled vertical engine comprises a crankshaft arranged in about a perpendicular direction; pistons connected to the crankshaft through connecting rods; cylinders receiving the pistons; a cylinder block(11) to which the cylinders are installed; cylinder heads(15) fastened to the cylinders, to constitute combustion chambers(20) by joining with the cylinders and the pistons; exhaust passages(24) in the cylinder heads; an exhaust passage unit venting exhaust gas to the outside from the combustion chambers; a cylinder block-cooling water jacket(JB) formed to the cylinder block around the combustion chambers; a cylinder head-cooling water jacket(JH) formed to the cylinder heads and formed independently of the cylinder block-cooling water jacket; exhaust passage-cooling water jackets(JM1,JM2,JM3) formed around the exhaust passage unit and formed independently of the cylinder head-cooling water jacket; and a coolant pump(46) supplying a coolant to each water jacket. The water-cooled vertical engine has a first cooling path supplying the coolant from the coolant pump to the cylinder block-cooling water jacket via the exhaust passage-cooling water jacket, and a second cooling path supplying the coolant from the coolant pump to the cylinder head-cooling water jacket. Thermostats(84,85) are each installed to the cylinder block-cooling water jacket and the cylinder head-cooling water jacket.

Therefore, for example, a cam profile of the cam 22a is set so that valve closing initiation timing of the solenoid spill valve 54 capable of obtaining a maximum value of a fuel forced feed quantity needed for fuel injection is positioned within a predetermined cam angle range wherein changes of cam velocity due to changes of cam phase are constant. And modifications of the valve closing initiation timing of the solenoid spill valve 54 for adjusting the fuel forced feed quantity are performed within the predetermined cam angle range.
