    • In a process and a device for producing blocks of expanded polystyrene, a loose mass (7) of polystyrene spheres is expanded in a mould (2-3), where a rear surface (9) of the polystyrene block (8) previously produced delimits the mould forming chamber. Therefore, through adherence the newly formed block (7-8) is joined to the rear end (9) of the block previously formed, and the block (8) made in this way is fed forward until it forms the rear end (9) for another newly expanded block (8), and so on to produce a sort of continuous block (8), which can be formed for cutting to any desired size, without producing any waste.

    • Two, endless, perforated steel belts are mounted one above the other to travel about spaced rolls, and between a pair of spaced, parallel, stationary side walls, so that confronting portions of the belts form two sides of an elongate, rectangular channel. Granules of thermoplastic material are continuously fed into one end of the channel in a quantity sufficient to completely fill the channel. The moving belts convey the granules first past a heating zone, where steam is introduced through the perforated belts to cause the granules to expand, and then past a cooling zone, where the granules are sintered to form a solid, rectangular block which is discharged continuously from the opposite end of the channel and onto a surface where it is severed into individual blocks. The diameters of the holes in the belts range from 0.5 to 0.8 mm., and the number of holes ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 per square meter of belt.

    • A machine for continuous production of a strand of porous thermoplastic material from expandable, pre-expanded granules of said material by additional expansion and agglutination in a channel open at both ends and defined between opposed horizontal portions of two endless belts movable along closed paths under the action of heat from separate heating boxes adjacent said belt portions. To vary the height of the channel and therewith that of the strand advanced therethrough, the spacing between the opposed defining belt portions is variable. For rendering possible any desired variation of said spacing with as short break of operation as possible, the heating boxes project outside the belt portions and are here sealed from one another and from the sides of the channel between the belt portions by primary beams ridigly secured to the heating boxes and secondary beams exchangeably interposed between the primary beams. The secondary beams have varying height dimensions preferably according to a predetermined module permitting to assemble them to any desired height of the channel. The assembled beams form an interior face in the same vertical plane and their interior surfaces are preferably covered with a layer of friction reducing material.

    • The invention relates to an apparatus for continuous production of a strand of porous thermoplastic material from preferably pre-expanded granules of said material containing an expanding agent. The apparatus comprises an elongated rectangular channel, two opposite sides of which are formed by the horizontal parts facing one another of two superimposed endless belts moving in a closed path between turning rollers. The granules are introduced through the open intake end of said channel and are expanded to final size and sintered together to a porous coherent strand by means of steam fed between the horizontal belt parts facing one another. The steam and the granules are fed into the channel through individual ducts which are separated from one another and connected to the intake end portion of the channel. Usually, a plurality of granule feeding ducts and a plurality of steam supplying ducts are attached to the intake end portion formed as a box of particular shape. Some specific grouping of the ducts connected to said box has proved to render excellent results in uniform distribution of the granules and even heating to sintering temperature.

    • Mutually overlying runs of two endless belts form therebetween a mold channel open at both ends. The mold forming runs move continuously in the same direction at the same rate of speed thereby to draw a sheet of material from a roll thereof downstream into and through the mold channel. The sheet material enters the mold channel in the form of a sleeve charged with only partially expanded granules of a synthetic thermoplastic material containing a heat expanding agent. As the charged sleeve moves downstream through the mold channel steam under pressure is introduced directly into the mold cavity thereby to fully expand the granules and covert the mass thereof into a coherent foamed agglutinated body which takes the shape of the mold cavity.
