    • PURPOSE:To accelerate response when an actuator is contracted, by forming an oil relief passage from a hydraulic chamber, in the constitution in which the timing or the lift of an intake/exhaust valve is varied by the extension and contracton of a hydraulic actuator. CONSTITUTION:The swing fulcrum of a locker arm 17 is shifted by the extension and contraction of a hydraulic actuator 25, and the timing or the lift of the intake/exhaust valve is varied according to the above-described shift. A relief passage 39 through which the oil in a hydraulic chamber 33 is discharged outside. When an outer cylinder part 29 is contracted over a certain amount is formed on a control sleeve 28. Therefore, oil can be discharged when the actuator 25 contracts, and the response performance in the case when the valve lift is reduced can be improved.

    • PURPOSE: To prevent an irregular wear etc. caused by an irregular contact of a cam by a method wherein an adjuster is constructed such that it is provided with a column member having a substantial vertical axis in respect to a plane in which a rocker arm can be oscillated and supporting the rocker arm in such a way as it may be oscillated.
      CONSTITUTION: When an engine is started to operate, a cam shaft 13 is cooperatively rotated, a rocker arm 21 is oscillated in its oscillating plane including its longitudinal center axis (x) and having the desired angle α in respect to an axis (y) of a column member 26 around a fulcrum point of the column member 26 in the adjuster 22 tdhrough a cam 14 to cause a valve 15 to be reciprocated. At this time, since the rocker arm 21 is supported by the column member 26 inserted into the fitting groove 21c, it can prevent the rocker arm 21 from falling around the center axis (x) even if the same is fallen toward the rocker arm 21 and a momentum is applied thereto. Therefore, it is possible to prevent an irregular contact between the cam 14 and the follower 21a and their irregular wear during a high speed operation of the engine.
