    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a latching mechanism provided for dispersing force of operating a valve to prevent the concentration of the force in a valve inoperative device for selectively transmitting the reciprocating motion of a cam follower to the valve in an internal combustion engine.
      SOLUTION: The valve inoperative device 10 comprises two pistons 30 opposed to each other in the direction of their diameters and arranged in horizontal holes 24 of an outside body member 2. A pair of latch members 40 are biased from inside ends 34 of the pistons by a compression spring 42. Each piston 30 gives radially inward force to the adjacent latch member 40 in response to engine oil pressure to move the latch member to a non-latch position against the bias of the spring 42. An outer peripheral portion on the lower side surface of each latch member is provided with two arched shoulder portions which engage with two portions angularly apart from each other on the latching surface in the outside body member at a latch position.
