    • PURPOSE:To prevent an air bag entering into a gap between the peripheral edge of an inflation opening of an air bag storage section and the peripheral edge of a guide opening in an instrument panel, by providing a cover for closing the gap. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle decelerates at a value more than a predetermined value, gas is produced from an inflator 64 so as to inflate an air bag 54. Then, the upper and lower, and left and right covers 56, 68, 62 are pressed, and their forward end parts 56B, 68B, 62B are expanded, respectively, so that an air bag casing 46 is opened. Accordingly, for example, the forward end part 56B of the upper cover 56 is made to be continuous with one side end part of an upper instrument panel 22, and accordingly it closes a gap 69 between the peripheral edge of an opening in the air bag 46 and the peripheral edge of a guide opening 25. With this arrangement, it is possible to prevent the air bag 54 from entering into the gap 69. Thereafter, a door 26 is opened in order to expand the air bag 54 in the driver's cabin 12 so as to confine and protect a passenger.
