    • PURPOSE:To prevent an air bag entering into a gap between the peripheral edge of an inflation opening of an air bag storage section and the peripheral edge of a guide opening in an instrument panel, by providing a cover for closing the gap. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle decelerates at a value more than a predetermined value, gas is produced from an inflator 64 so as to inflate an air bag 54. Then, the upper and lower, and left and right covers 56, 68, 62 are pressed, and their forward end parts 56B, 68B, 62B are expanded, respectively, so that an air bag casing 46 is opened. Accordingly, for example, the forward end part 56B of the upper cover 56 is made to be continuous with one side end part of an upper instrument panel 22, and accordingly it closes a gap 69 between the peripheral edge of an opening in the air bag 46 and the peripheral edge of a guide opening 25. With this arrangement, it is possible to prevent the air bag 54 from entering into the gap 69. Thereafter, a door 26 is opened in order to expand the air bag 54 in the driver's cabin 12 so as to confine and protect a passenger.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent a mechanism installed in a side door, for mechanically igniting an inflator, from being erroneously operated due to a shock upon closing of the door, by providing an operation limiting means for limiting the ignition when the side door is opened and releasing the limitation when the side door is closed, in the mechanism. CONSTITUTION:In a mechanical ignition device 25 in a side air bag apparatus, a push pin 26a is projected from a door inner panel by the resilient force of a spring 26b when a side door 21 is opened, and a drive lever 26 is turned clockwise in association with the motion of the push pin 26a. Accordingly, the drive lever 26 swings a stationary lever 25a, overcoming the resilient force of a return spring 25b so as to limit the operation of the mechanical ignition device 25. Further, during closing of the side door, the front end of the push pin 26a abuts against a center pillar 27 and is pushed into the door so that the drive lever 26 does not any longer urges the stationary lever 25a, and accordingly, the operation of the mechanical ignition device becomes possible.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a safety device for a sensor for a preloader which prohibits unnecessary operation of the preloader. CONSTITUTION:One end part of a shaft 221 serving as a seat belt pull-out detecting means is extended through a release lever 220. When a seat belt 26 is pulled out by a given amount or more and the winding diameter R of the seat belt 26 is decreased, movement in the direction of an arrow mark F is made by a given amount, the release lever 220 is rotated in a given angle arc in the direction of an arrow mark K, and a preloader sensor is released from locking. The tip part 225A of a lever 225 serving as a retractor assembly state detecting means is engaged with the upper surface of the tip part of the release lever 220. The lever 225 is separated away from the release lever 220 only when the lever is moved in the direction of the arrow mark F by means of the winding device supporting upper part 238 of a vehicle, and the release lever 220 is rotatable in the direction of an arrow mark K.
