    • A trailing arm (14) is provided for a vehicle suspension (10) including a forward portion (28). The forward portion extends longitudinally to a rearward portion (30) with the trailing arm having at least a portion with an open bottom (31). The trailing arm preferably has a generally U-shaped cross-section over a substantial portion of its length. A bushing assembly (34) is secured to the forward portion defining a first pivotal connection by which the trailing arm is secured to the frame. An air spring support plate (56) is secured to the rearward portion opposite the open bottom. Preferably, the trailing arm tapers inwardly from the rearward portion to the forward portion to provide increased structural rigidity in the area of the trailing arm that supports the axle and other suspension components. The trailing arm is formed of a sheet of metal to provide the generally U-shaped cross-section. The bushing assembly is welded to one end portion of trailing arm to define the first pivotal connection, and an axle attachment member is welded to another portion of the trailing arm. Brackets and plates for supporting suspension components such as air springs (18), an anti-roll bar (22), and shock absorbers may be welded to the trailing arm.

    • A vehicle 10 has wheels 12, each associated with a stub axle 14, the outermost end of which will rise and fall relative to the car 10. A mechanical or gas spring 16 provides resilience to resist this movement. In some vehicles, the resilience of the spring 16 is adjustable, and set automatically by a control system in order to accommodate differences in driving conditions, techniques or the like. An algorithm used to control the resilience will assume an expected weight of the car 10. If the weight of the car changes significantly, such as by the addition of protection in the form of armour plating, armoured glass or the like, the same algorithm will no longer be appropriate for setting the spring 16. Thus, additional springs 20 and/or torsion bars 22 are used to provide preloading to the suspension arrangement so that the spring 16 is then required only to support the unmodified weight of the car 10, allowing existing control arrangements and algorithms to be used without modification.
