    • A trailing arm suspension (10) is provided for use in a heavy-duty vehicle. The suspension includes a frame (12) and a pair of spaced apart trailing arms (16) that each include a forward portion (18) pivotally supported by the frame. The trailing arms extend longitudinally from the forward portion to a rearward portion (20). An anti-roll bar (30) includes opposing end portions (32) and a central portion (34) transverse to and extending between the end portions. The end portions are respectively arranged longitudinally along a portion of the trailing arms and are pivotally secured respectively to the trailing arms. The end portions may be secured to the trailing arms by threaded fasteners (54) and further supported on the trailing arm by a bracket (50) having a bushing (52). At least a portion of the end portion is received in a pocket (36) or channel in the trailing arm so that the end portion does not extend below the trailing arm.

    • A trailing arm (14) is provided for a vehicle suspension (10) including a forward portion (28). The forward portion extends longitudinally to a rearward portion (30) with the trailing arm having at least a portion with an open bottom (31). The trailing arm preferably has a generally U-shaped cross-section over a substantial portion of its length. A bushing assembly (34) is secured to the forward portion defining a first pivotal connection by which the trailing arm is secured to the frame. An air spring support plate (56) is secured to the rearward portion opposite the open bottom. Preferably, the trailing arm tapers inwardly from the rearward portion to the forward portion to provide increased structural rigidity in the area of the trailing arm that supports the axle and other suspension components. The trailing arm is formed of a sheet of metal to provide the generally U-shaped cross-section. The bushing assembly is welded to one end portion of trailing arm to define the first pivotal connection, and an axle attachment member is welded to another portion of the trailing arm. Brackets and plates for supporting suspension components such as air springs (18), an anti-roll bar (22), and shock absorbers may be welded to the trailing arm.

    • The present invention provides a heavy duty suspension system (10) including a frame (12) and a pair of spaced apart trailing arms (14). The trailing arms each include a forward portion (17) pivotally supported by the frame and extending longitudinally to a rearward portion (18). An axle (26) has opposing end portions (29) pivotally supported respectively on the trailing arms. A V-rod (44) includes first (46) and second (48) spaced apart ends extending to a common third end (50) with the first and second ends preferably pivotally attached to the frame. The third end is preferably pivotally attached to the axle. The V-rod provides lateral stability and defines a pinion angle (56) with the trailing arms. Preferably, the longitudinal length of the V-rod and the length of the trailing arm from the pivotal attachment on the frame to the pivotal attachment on the axle are of equal length to provide a constant pinion angle during movement of the suspension system.
