    • A pitch transfer gear transmission which enables drive to be transmitted from a gear of having one modulus (42) to a gear having another modulus (46) includes at least two gears (12,16) which have a different number of teeth and which are able to rotate relative to one another, so that the teeth of the two gears (12,16) can form a gear modulus of a first value at one part of the periphery of the gear, and a gear modulus of another value at another part of the periphery of the gear. Continuously variable transmissions are formed by providing an input or output gear (42,46) which has a modulus which varies along the length of the gear. Pitch transfer gear assembly (30) engages with the input or output gear (42,46), and is moveable by a mechanism (59) along the length of the gear changing modulus, so as to set the drive ratio of the transmission.

    • An inspection apparatus (40) for remote inspection of the trepan radius area (34) of the inlet sleeve (24) of a steam turbine (10). The apparatus (40) provides a sealed volume (50) between a pair of inflatable bladders (46,48) for the introduction of a liquid couplant for the immersion of ultrasonic transducers (42,44). A laser line generator (62) generates a beam of light visible through camera (60) which impinges upon the inlet bell seal (30) when the apparatus (40) is in a proper inspection position within the inlet sleeve (24). Guide vanes (56) provide centering and generate an insertion force during air assisted insertion of apparatus (40). Transducers (42,44) are indexed axially and circumfretially by the independent rotation of axial drive gear (72) and longitudinal drive gear (70) engaged with a pattern of gear teeth (69) formed as a combination of circumferential spur gear teeth and axial rack gear teeth cut into a single surface of a spline shaft (68).

    • The invention relates to a shaft-hub unit with a toothing system for transmitting torques, comprising a shaft (1) with shaft toothing (5) and a hub (2) with hub toothing (7). Said shaft toothing and said hub toothing mesh with each other. According to the invention, torques are introduced via a shaft stem (4), the shaft toothing (5) being situated at the end of said stem. The tooth profile of said shaft toothing (5) is variable in a longitudinal direction. The toothing system has at least two areas (9, 10) which extend axially. In each area, the root diameter of the shaft toothing (5) is constant and the tip diameter of the hub toothing (7) is constant. For each pair of adjacent areas, the area which faces towards the shaft stem (4) has the greater shaft toothing (5) root diameter and the greater hub toothing (7) tip diameter. Equally, for each pair of adjacent areas, the area facing towards the shaft stem (4) has a shaft toothing (5) tooth profile which is congruent with a tip section that forms the upper part of the adjacent area.
