    • A four-way open-center rotary control valve (210, 260) is provided which features internally generated hydraulic reaction torque. The hydraulic reaction torque is generated between inner (212, 262) and outer valve members (214, 264) having multiple inlet (220, 222) and return control orifices (232, 234) formed at differing radii. The return control orifices are formed at larger radii than the inlet control orifices - thereby resulting in expanded values of radially disposed area on either side of ridges which partially form the return control orifices. Thus, differential output pressure present in first and second output zones, which are alternately disposed between pairs of the inlet control orifices and pairs of the return control orifices, generates the hydraulic reaction torque via the product of the differential pressure, the expanded values of the radially disposed area and effective radius of the radially disposed area. Generally, the first and second output zones are coupled to either side of a double acting utilization device via controlled orifice flow restrictors (488), also of the present invention. The controlled orifice flow restrictors comprise an oversize orifice (494) which is selectively filled by a spring-loaded contoured valve member (496).

    • A rotary sliding valve consisting of a valve liner (1) and a rotary sliding valve (2) is fitted with control channels (3 to 8 or 16 to 18) distributed around the periphery having control edges (e.g. 27, 28) for control and distribution of the pressurized oil. The pressure buildup in an ancillary servomotor (12) is managed by deflecting part of the incoming flow. This deflection occurs at the control edges in control phases. A return flow channel (20) located behind each of the incoming flow control edges (e.g. 28) is fitted with a deep gap (34) which has a relatively large flow-through cross section. On both sides of the deep gap are arranged choke gaps (35 and 36). The choke gaps have a narrow choke cross-section. When the rotating walve (2) is rotated, e.g. in a clockwise direction, a high pressure gradient develops between the control channel (3) connected with the active pressure chamber (10) and the return-flow channel (20). In order to avoid the production of hissing noises when the pressurized oil enters the return flow channel (20), the deep gap (34) is closed at the time of a control phase (9), still in the low pressure area at approximately 30 bar. Then, in the high pressure area, the pressure regulation is effected only by way of the choke gaps (35 and 36), with the deflected flow being conducted over a long choke stretch. In this choke stretch the pressure is gradually reduced to that of the low pressure area so that there are no flow-out noises at the entry to the return flow channel (20).

    • A control valve for a hydraulic power steering system includes a pair of flow circuits arranged in parallel. Each flow circuit includes an upstream and downstream flow orifices arranged in series. Each set of orifices defines between the orifices an intermediate pressure zone of the valve. Both orifices close together from a centered condition of the valve and fully close substantially together at a fully closed condition of the valve. The downstream orifice is larger than the upstream orifice when open to minimize the likelihood of cavitation and noise. An equalization passage fluidly connects both intermediate pressure zones to equalize pressure despite variations in orifice size due to manufacturing tolerances. The control valve includes a bypass passage in parallel with the flow circuits. A pressure relief valve in the control valve has a normally closed valving member in the bypass passage that opens the valve in the event of overpressure.
