    • Reporting existence of a predetermined condition, such as wear level, of a brake friction lining (32) of a railway or other vehicle brake friction pad (30), in which the pad is held in an overlying holder (28) by way of the pad backing (34) having an upstanding mount (36) which is received in a locating recess (31) in the holder, is effected by coupling signals from condition sensing apparatus (42, 52) in the lining to processing apparatus (76) by coupling transmission arrangement (62). The coupling transmission arrangement has a signal coupling member (63), arranged to extend into a coupling cavity (65) defined in the upstanding mount of the friction pad backing and/or conveniently within an open recess in the backing, that is, between the pad and the holder which forms a closure for the cavity. The signal coupling member carries conductors (64) arranged to couple with the condition sensing apparatus within the cavity by resilient abutment which biases the member against cavity boundary, and physically supports the coupling transmission arrangement as a whole with respect to the lining. Conveniently, the signal coupling member carries a transmitter (72) of radio or other wireless energy to a receiver (78) coupled to the processing apparatus, and means (73) of powering the transmitter, possibly by energy emitted from a selection energy source (82) near the processing apparatus or receiver, therefore permitting retrofitting of condition reporting to existing vehicle brakes by replacement only of the friction pad and insertion of signal coupling means of the associated coupling transmission means. The friction pad may be a planar disc brake pad or a curved wheel tread block.
