    • The shut-off or throttle valve described has a housing (12), through which a flow channel passes, and a flap (18) which can be rotated about a spindle (20) passing across a section through the flow channel. The flap (18) is in the closed position when it is disposed in a plane including the spindle and running at right angles to the direction of flow in the channel. All round the plane of the flap (18), a gap is maintained, in all positions of the flap, between the edge of the flap and the housing (12) such that the gap is not reduced to zero by the thermal expansion expected to occur during operation. The housing (12) is fitted with stop strips (34, 36) which act as seals for the faces of the flap (18) at the edges on its periphery. The surface of the flap is divided by the spindle (20) into two areas. Associated with each area is a stop strip (34, 36) on the housing (12) and extending up to the spindle on each area, these two stop strips (34, 36) being located on opposite sides of the flap (18).
