    • A tip reinforced electrosurgical device for removing tissue from a target site within or on a patient's body includes a shaft having proximal and distal end portions and an active screen electrode on the distal end portion. A return electrode includes arms that are interlocked with the shaft distal end portion. Interlocking features may include dimples, bends, slots, recess, apertures, threads. Adhesives may also be provided to increase the strength of the connection between the tip assembly and the shaft. The electrosurgical probe further includes at least one electrical connector extending through the shaft that connects the active electrode with a high frequency power supply. At least one electrical coupling member such as a ballwire secures the active screen electrode to the shaft distal end and electrically couples the screen electrode to the at least one electrical connector. An aspiration lumen within the shaft having a distal opening coupled to the active electrode may be provided to aspirate fluids and tissue fragments.

    • An apparatus and method for cutting a material including conducting and non-conducting materials (12) such as biological tissue, cellulose or plastic while the material is submerged in a conductive liquid medium (14). The apparatus (10) has a cutting electrode with an elongate cutting portion (16) having an aspect ratio (length to width) of 1 or more and a return electrode (22). The two electrodes are immersed in the conductive medium and a voltage is applied between them to heat the medium, thus producing a vapor cavity (30) around the elongate cutting portion and ionizing a gas (32) inside the vapor cavity to produce a plasma (28). The voltage applied between the electrodes is modulated in pulses having a modulation format selected to minimize the size of the vapor cavity, its rate of formation and heat diffusion into the material while the latter is cut with an edge of the elongate cutting portion. The modulation format includes pulses ranging in duration from 10 µs to 10 ms, as well as minipulses and micropulses, as necessary. The apparatus and method of invention allow the user to perform efficient thermal ablation and electrosurgical procedures in particular at power levels as low as 10 mW with minimal thermal and cavitation damage.
