    • An apparatus (1) and method for aligning flexible printing plates (251), and for accurately drilling pin register holes (191) therein, includes a three way adjustable table top assembly (23) which can be selectively adjusted in X and Y directions, and rotated about an axis. A pneumatic clamp (253) is positioned on the table top assembly (23) for clamping a pre-marked flexible printing plate (251) to be drilled in place thereon. A movable stereomicroscope viewer (232) is slidable above the table top assembly (23) to view the flexible plate (251) for position adjustment via the adjustable table top assembly (23). A drill assembly (91) is positionable over each location at which a pin register hole (191) is to be drilled. The drill assembly (91) includes a movable hollow core drill bit (75) surrounding a stationary rod (181). Once the flexible plate (251) is aligned via the viewer (232), the drill assembly (91) is sequentially positioned above the flexible plate (251) at each point to be drilled with a pin register hole (191).

    • A computer aided design and manufacturing system comprises a platform (7) suspended by means of three pairs of supportive legs (8) which are coupled thereto at triangularly spaced-apart locations by means of three universal joints (9) each of which couples to one end of each of the two legs (8) of a respective pair, the two legs (8) of each pair extending from their respective universal joint (9) in divergent directions to spaced-apart locations in an overhead mounting whereat each leg (8) is drivingly engaged by a respective gimbal-mounted electric motor (10) arranged to move the leg (8) in its own longitudinal direction. The platform (7) position and orientation can thus be controlled by appropriate operation of the six leg drive motors (10). A rotary indexing stage (11) is mounted on the platform (7) for rotation in the plane of the platform (7) under control of a further electric motor (149, 150) and serves as a mounting for a stage (12) providing for pivotal movement in a plane perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the indexing stage (11), such pivotal movement being effected under control of yet a further electric motor. Mounted on the pivotal stage (12) is a rotary tool holder (13) arranged to be driven by yet another electric motor (75). The various electric motors are precisely positionable under computer control for effecting automatic manufacture of an object by cutting the same out of a block of material by means of a tool held in the tool holder (13).

    • A machine such as a machine tool includes a pair of spaced platforms. One platform (11, 31, 185, 72, 159, 142) may mount an operator such as a tool in a spindle and the other platforms (10, 20, 180, 170, 144, 163) may mount an object such as a workpiece. The spaced platforms are joined by six powered and extensible legs (20-25, 40-45, 64-69, 145-150, 166, 182-84, 187-89) joined to the respective platforms by universal joints. The length of the legs is individually manipulated to vary the position of the platforms and, therefore, the object and operator relative to each other in six axes. The powered legs may be hydraulic cylinders (20-25) or recirculating ball screw driven (195, 197, 198). The distance between the spaced platforms may be measured by separate extensible instrument arms (130, 131, 171) which join the platforms. The instrument arms may use a digital position device (238, 240) to measure the extension and contraction of the instrument arms or may use a laser interferometer (267) for that purpose. The changes in the length of the instrument arms may be used to generate signals that control the extension and contraction of the powered legs. A method is also disclosed for converting part program coordinate block instructions into instructions for varying the length of the powered legs.
