    • The invention relates to a distance measurement method for a motor vehicle that is caught in a traffic jam, for instance.     • A method and device are disclosed for preventing collisions between vehicles. The invention relates to radar systems for preventing collisions between vehicles. The proposed method involves the generation of an exploratory frequency-modulated superhigh signal, receiving the reflected signal, generation of an intermediate frequency, storage of the data concerning objects in the detection zone, analysis of the relative closing speed, and alerting the vehicle's driver to the possibility of a collison. The safety of the vehicle is improved by: heterodyning of the intermediate frequency signals reflected by objects in the detection zone onto a constant second intermediate frequency; analysis of the second intermediate frequency signals; isolation of data concerning the presence of objects in the detection zone; and, once the relative closing speed has been determined, generation of signals to warn of a possible collision depending on the vehicle's own speed. The proposed device for preventing collisions between vehicles comprises: an antenna-feeder unit, a superhigh frequency generator, a modulator, a fluctuating frequency generator; a mixer, intermediate frequency preamplifier, band-pass filter, switch connected in series, a summator, low-frequency filter; a reference voltage generator and pulse former, and an intermediate frequency amplifier also connected in series; a narrow-band filter and detector connected in series; and an amplifier. The heterodyne input to the receiver mixer is connected to the superhigh frequency generator output via a directed coupler whose second output is connected to the antenna-feeder unit input, while the mixer signal input is connected to the antenna-feeder unit output. A controllable voltage source, tunable generator and second mixer are all connected in series to the summator output; the signal input of the mixer is connected to the intermediate frequency amplifier output, while the mixer output is connected to the narrow-band filter input.
