    • An electronic pressure control valve (40) is connected to a lockup clutch (4) directly connected to input/output shafts (1a, 2a) of a torque converter (2). In order to change the speed, the lockup clutch (4) is disconnected when the filling of transmission clutches (21-24) to be engaged next has been finished, to prevent the nonavailability of torque. With respect to the lockup clutch (4) in which an inner pressure (Pt) of the torque converter is applied to a back pressure portion of a piston, the inner pressure of the torque converter (2) is applied to the side of a proportional solenoid (42) of the pressure control valve (40), to enable an initial pressure to decrease. During a speed changing operation, the lockup clutch (4) is not completely disconnected to maintain the low pressure, whereby a shock due to the lockup clutch shifting operation is lessened. In order to gradually increase the hydraulic pressure, a degree of opening of a throttle, the weight of the vehicle and a gear ratio are determined, and a rate of gradual increase is varied in accordance with these values. In order to drive the vehicle at a regular speed, the hydraulic pressure in the lockup clutch is controlled so that it is in the vicinity of the level of the engine output torque, to thereby widen the region of travelling with the lockup clutch used.

    • In an automatic transmission equipped with a lock-up-clutch (6) which allows engine power to be transferred to the automatic transmission (1) directly or through a torque converter (2), a detecting means (11, 12) which detect an input revolution speed of the transmission and an output revolution speed, a judging means of starting of gear change (66) which judges the start of gear change by comparing the ratio between said input revolution speed and output revolution speed with the gear ratio before the gear change, a judging means of completion of gear change (68) which judges the completion of gear change by comparing the ratio between an input revolution speed and an output revolution speed with the gear ratio after the gear change, and a lock-up solenoid (10) which releases a lock-up-clutch (6) during gear change on receiving output signals of said judging means of starting of gear change and judging means of completion of gear change are provided. This enables a proper control of the lock-up-clutch at the gear change even in the case of transmissions of the same kind and in any condition of gear change, preventing thus the occurrence of shock, i.e., a gear change under the conditions of racing of an engine and the engagement of the lock-up-clutch.

    • An electric-hydraulic control for an automatic gearbox (1) has a selecting slide (4), at least for the neutral position (N) as well as for the forward (D) and backward (R) motions, an electronic control apparatus (5) linked to at least one sensor (55) for sensing the gear output speed, magnetic valves (6; 65) kept in the neutral position by springs, a source of hydraulic pressure (7), pressure control (8) and switching valves (9) and dampers for operating gear separating clutches and brakes (A-E). A backward gear securing device is composed of a magnetic valve (6) which cooperates with a switching valve (9), both elements being also used for other gear selection operations. The magnetic valve (6) is either immediately switched by moving the selecting slide (4) in the backward motion when the speed of forward motion attains or falls below a predetermined value or the switching is discontinued until the speed of forward motion attains or falls below the predetermined value. The electronic control apparatus (5) switches off the magnetic valve (6), and the backward gear selection (B) and brake (D) are activated by the working pressure via the switching valve (9).
