    • A hybrid gear/sprocket-based transmission is provided for driving a pair of coaxial, counter-rotating propellers in vessels. A drive shaft couplable to an engine crank shaft extends rearward into the transmission case, and a pair of coaxial driven shafts extend rearward out of the transmission case, to which are attachable a pair of propellers. A gear train, containing an even number of gears, reverses the rotational direction of the engine; a flexible member retains the rotational direction of the engine. Improved stability characteristics are imparted by supporting the drive shaft at two points and also by positioning the drive and the driven shafts in vertical alignment.

    • The current manufacturing practice in the recreational boating industry is to align and couple a singular inboard engine to a singular impeller drive. The disclosed invention is a power transmission device that allows for coupling of a singular engine to one or more impeller drives. The invention can provide a single engine watercraft with the advantages of a twin-engine watercraft, but at half the complexity and half the weight of a twin-engine installation. The present invention can also be employed for the installation of a larger high performance engine while powering standard low cost impeller drives, and without fear of loss in reliability, or even in a multiple fashion, within a multi-engine watercraft, allowing for various options such as closer placement of the impeller drives without the staggering of engines.

    • In an outboard motor mounted on a stern of a boat and having an internal combustion engine at its upper portion and a propeller at its lower portion that is powered by the engine to propel the boat, and having a shift mechanism comprising a clutch installed in the outboard motor to be engaged from with a forward gear that causes the boat to be propelled in a forward direction or a reverse gear that causes the boat to be propelled in a reverse direction, a shift rod movably installed in the outboard motor, and a shift slider connected to the shift rod to slide to a position at which the clutch is engaged with the forward gear or a position at which the clutch is engaged with the reverse gear, an actuator such as an electric motor is installed in the outboard motor to move the shift rod. The arrangement can mitigate the load than that under manual operation and offer improved operation feel, without leading to an increase in number of components or weight, and in addition, the required installation space at the hull is no longer needed.

    • Boat propeller transmission with a horizontal input shaft, a bevel gear set, a vertical intermediate shaft, an additional bevel gear set, and at least one horizontal propeller shaft. Between the bevel gear sets, a two-speed planetary gear set is engaged, to provide two gear speeds in the same direction between the input shaft and the propeller shaft. A control unit controls the shifting between the low and high gear speed. A sensor senses the position of a gear selector. When the gear selector is in the reverse position, the control unit locks the planetary gear set in the high speed position, regardless of the engine speed.

Improved stability characteristics are imparted by supporting the drive shaft at two points within the case and also by positioning the drive and the driven shafts in vertical alignment. The adaptability of the transmission to being coupled with an automobile engine confers improved noise, reliability, and fuel efficiency characteristics.

    • A propeller assembly includes an interchangeable drive sleeve, an inner hub, a biasing member forcing the drive sleeve into contact with the inner hub, and a propeller including an outer hub in which the drive sleeve and inner hub are inserted. In an exemplary embodiment, the drive sleeve includes a plurality of teeth that engage a plurality of teeth on the inner hub. The spring is configured to permit the drive sleeve to move axially away from the inner hub upon the occurrence of a sufficient torque and allow the drive sleeve to rotate relative to the inner hub. A bore extends through drive sleeve, and a plurality of grooves are in an inner diameter surface of the drive sleeve bore. These grooves are configured to mate with splines on a propeller shaft. The inner hub includes a plurality of keys and the outer hub includes a plurality of complimentary keyways to limit relative movement between the inner hub drive flange and the outer hub.
