    • A machine vision inspection system for industrial parts such as plastic molded caps or the like can reliably detect defects at very high inspection rates on the order of 1600 per minute of a variety of cap colors and liners including previously difficult to inspect combinations. Advantageously, the system includes an inclined inspection ramp which provides separation between the caps which are processed through an inspection station to provide accurate imaging of each individual cap without interference from adjacent caps. Further, the inspection station includes a light source which is provided on the back side of the cap in the form of an infrared LED strobe light which provides accurate and reliable lighting for appropriate imaging of caps of any color to detect and identify defects therein.

    • Disclosed are methods and apparatus for at least one of authenticating, sorting or counting documents, as well as to security structures contained within documents and to documents containing security structures. A security device or structure includes an optical gain medium and a structure having boundaries that impart an overall geometry to the structure that, in combination with at least one material property of the structure, favors in one embodiment the creation of at least one mode that enhances an emission of electromagnetic radiation within a narrow band of wavelengths. Suitable shapes for the structure comprise elongated, generally cylindrical shapes such as filaments, a sphere shape, a partial-sphere shape, a toroidal shape, a cubical and other polyhedral shape, and a disk shape. The structure preferably comprises at least one of a monolithic structure or a multi-layered structure or an ordered structure that may provide for distributed optical feedback. In a preferred embodiment the security device forms a part of a currency, a passport, a lottery ticket, a negotiable security, a credit card or debit card, or any substrate or carrier which it is desired to at least one of authenticate, count, encode, sort or verify.

    • A glass sorting machine optically sorts glass cullet according to different color characteristics by irradiating the cullet with red, green and blue light as the cullet are passed through a sensing region between a light source and light sensors responsive to the different light colors. The attenuation levels of the different light colors are measured by the sensors as the cullet passes through the sensing region. The machine analyzes the attenuation levels to determine the color characteristics of the cullet. A collimator is typically used to enhance shadow definition. In one embodiment, a pixel grid map is made of the sensing region and each cullet that passes through the sensing region. Mapped on to each grid is a red, green, and blue digital signal. Attenuated signals are compared against baseline values to determine the attenuation for given cullet. The pixel grid map may be used with a data erosion technique to compensate for refraction. To reduce errors associated with optical impurities, the machine normalizes the baseline values when cullet are not in the sensing region by taking the derivative of the sensed signal and normalizing the baseline signal when no cullet are present.

    • An article transporting, and preferably also color and/or weight sorting, assembly and method, support the articles (.g. apples or like pieces of fruit), and effect precise rotation (e.g. within about 5°) of all apples transported thereby. This allows accurate determination of the apple's color by color sensing equipment (e.g. a color camera). The assembly comprises a support element, and two sets of cones mounted to the support by rotatable shafts, each set comprising first and second cones having a tapered exterior surface, the cones on each shaft facing each other and tapering to an imaginary substantially common midpoint. The cones support an apple essentially without the apple engaging the shaft. The cones may be of soft yieldable plastic or rubber with a first taper of about 25-35° (e.g. about 28°), and optionally one or more steps of different taper. The shafts are positively rotated substantially in unison by a gear mounted to the end of each shaft and engaging a stationary gear rack, so that for each 360° revolution of a shaft an apple supported by the cones rotates substantially 120°. The rack is designed to have only half or less the life of the gears.
