    • An apparatus is described for treating prepared specimens. The apparatus comprises at least two container rows arranged in parallel to each other, each comprising a plurality of reagent containers and a transport mechanism for transporting at least one transport container that receives at least one carrier holding at least one prepared specimen. The transport mechanism is movable along an X and Z axis. A rotation unit is provided comprising holding arms and at least one holding element. The container rows are received rotatably at the ends of the holding arms of the at least one holding element that is connected to a rotation shaft such that it co-rotates with the rotation shaft that extends parallel to the X axis. The rotation unit is adapted to assume at least one working position allowing the transport mechanism to have access to the reagent container.

    • A description is given of a drive device for an automatic embedding machine (1) for treating samples (17) for histological examinations, having a plurality of containers (4, 5) which are arranged one beside the other and are each assigned an object holder (6). The object holders (6) are fastened, on a lifting device (18), over the containers (4, 5), the lifting device (18) having a turntable (7) and a rotatably mounted guide rod (8). The guide rod (8) is designed such that it can be moved by a motor, perpendicularly with respect to the direction of rotation of the turntable (7), via the lifting device (18). Provided for the purpose of driving the guide rod (8) is an open-ended, flexibly designed drive element (21) which, at its first end, is arranged between two rollers (26, 27) of the motor drive (20) and, by means of its second end, is connected fixedly to the housing (24) of the automatic embedding machine (1). The second end of the drive element (21) is guided over a deflection roller (19) and forms a loop (28) for receiving the guide rod (8).

    • A housing for a microtome which is capable of being employed in a cryostat. The microtome housing includes a waterproof microtome chamber having an elongate slot formed in the wall thereof through which an object holding device extends. The elongate slot has a seal disposed about its periphery and the slot is covered by a coverplate which is provided adjacent to the seal. The coverplate is rotatable about the axis of a pin which is provided on the interior of the chamber wall. The chamber further includes magnets which are arranged on the wall of the chamber adjacent to the elongate slot such that the magnets retain the coverplate over the elongate slot. This arrangement allows the object holding device to be easily inserted into and removed from the chamber, while at the same time maintaining substantially moisture free conditions within the chamber.

    • The present invention relates to a device for braking or locking a shaft (6) of a microtome (1). The microtome (1) comprises the shaft (6), an actuating element (2), a movement mechanism (37) and a housing (38). With the movement mechanism (37) an object to be cut can be moved relative to a knife blade. The actuating element (2) can be manually actuated by an operator. As a result thereof, the shaft (6) can be rotated. Via the shaft (6), the movement mechanism (37) for performing the relative motion between the object and the knife blade can be driven. Further, the present invention relates to a method for operating a device for braking a shaft (6) of a microtome (1). So that the device can be used in a mechanically formed movement mechanism (37), the inventive device is characterized by an actuator and a braking unit (25). The braking unit (25) is connected in a rotatably fixed manner to the shaft (6). With the actuator, the braking unit (25) can be automatically placed in a brake position in which the shaft (6) can be connected in a rotatably fixed manner to the housing (11).
