    • Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone of the formula I ##STR1## is prepared by a process wherein A. 2,5,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one or 2,3,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one is reacted with air or oxygen at from 0.degree. to 150.degree. C. in a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(I) oxide or copper(II) oxide and in the presence of from 1 to 10 moles of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of trimethylcyclohexenone, and thereafterB. the reaction mixture, which essentially contains 2,3,6-trimethylphenol and/or 4-halo-2,3,6-trimethylphenol, is mixed with an alkali metal alcoholate in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, and is then reacted with air, pure oxygen or tert.-butyl hydroperoxide at from 0.degree. to 150.degree. C., or wherein from 1 to 10 mole equivalents of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of substrate to be reacted are passed into a mixture containing a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol and a catalytic amount of copper(I) oxide or copper(II) oxide at from 0.degree. to 30.degree. C., an alkali metal alcoholate is added in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, about one mole equivalent of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol is added and the mixture is then reacted with air, oxygen or tert.-butyl peroxide at from 0.degree. to 150.degree. C.Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone is an important intermediate for the synthesis of vitamin E.

    • A tape guide, especially a guide for thin magnetic tapes which are subjected to strong acceleration forces in the longitudinal direction, and a tape transport apparatus with a central capstan, comprising such a tape guide. The tape guide includes one or two rotatable, but fixedly arranged guide rollers having flanges arranged around part of the periphery thereof, which flanges each have an ingress and an egress chamfer for the tape. When one guide roller is used, the magnetic head is positioned between a tape reel and the guide roller and, when two guide rollers are used, it is positioned between the said two rollers, the magnetic head bearing against the unsupported span of tape in each case. The tape guide may be provided with means for producing cushions of air for stabilizing the roller as it rotates.

    • This invention relates to a tape transport mechanism, particularly an improved contact winding tape transport system modified to protect it against tape transport disturbances occasioned by mechanical impacts. A shock-resisting coupling means is provided which is allocated to the reel carriers and which allows slow movements of the carriers toward and away from a drive capstan during normal working of the mechanism but prevents sudden movements of the carriers induced by mechanical shocks for instance. Piston/cylinder assemblies and magnetic rope/drum arrangements are disclosed as such shock-resisting means. The transport mechanism can be used advantageously in portable apparatus, preferably in magnetic tape recorders and especially in video cameras.
