    • A furnace includes a decomposition chamber configured to form a fire pit for controlled decomposition of combustible waste material, a preheat chamber connected to and located generally above the decomposition chamber, and an afterburn chamber operably connected to an outlet on the decomposition chamber. The decomposition chamber includes an inlet for allowing controlled input of air to the decomposition chamber to create an oxygen-starved environment. The outlet is positioned generally opposite the inlet on the decomposition chamber and adjacent the fire pit such that the gases from the preheat chamber and the decomposition chamber flow generally across the decomposition chamber and through the burning/decomposing waste materials in the fire pit. The afterburn chamber chamber operates with a vacuum such that the gases and vapors from the preheat chamber and the decomposition chamber are drawn through the fire pit such that they are treated by the hot decomposing matter in the fire pit. A heat exchanger and roaster are operably connected to the exhaust of the afterburn chamber. An input mechanism for controlling input of chopped waste materials is connected to the preheat chamber.

    • A waste recycling system which separates the reusable components within waste such as tires by incomplete burning followed by a series of separation steps. The incomplete burning is carried out within a chamber having at least two hollow perforated rollers on which the waste is supported. The tires are ignited and caused to smolder within the chamber, allowing gaseous and vapor by-products to be released and travel downward into the rollers. Inorganic solid matter remaining from the combustion process continuously falls between the slowly rotating rollers into a removal bin or conveyor. The gaseous combustion by-products are directed through an oil bath filter having a mesh on which sprayers apply a cooling oil mist to capture the oil vapor. The remaining hydrocarbon emissions are burned incompletely, and the resulting carbon black within the effluent filtered out. The effluent is then completely combusted generating heat and then scrubbed to emit a relatively clean gaseous discharge.

    • An apparatus for incinerating a waste material by processing the waste material through dry distillation and gasification has a gasification furnace for storing a waste material therein and burning a portion of the waste material and thermally decomposing the remainder of the waste material by way of dry distillation with the heat of combustion of the portion of the waste material, thereby producing a combustible gas, and a combustion furnace connected to the gasification furnace through a gas introduction passage for mixing, with oxygen, the combustible gas introduced therein from the gasification furnace through the gas introduction passage and combusting the combustible gas mixed with the oxygen, the combustion furnace having a gas inlet port connected to the gas introduction passage. An oxygen supply device supplies the combustion furnace with an amount of oxygen required to combust the combustible gas into the combustion furnace while generating a swirling oxygen flow around the gas inlet port.

    • An incinerator is described which includes a cylindrical rotary furnace slightly inclined downwardly in its longitudinal direction for combusting material introduced into an entrance, a cylindrical housing for housing the furnace and a secondary combustor connected with an exit of the furnace. Partition plates are placed in an annular space between the housing and the furnace for defining a combustion air introduction zone below the furnace and recirculated gas introduction zone above the combustion air introduction zone. A gas recirculation duct extends from the secondary combustor to the furnace housing for introducing a portion of the gas flow discharged from the secondary combustor into the recirculated gas introduction zone. An external air flow is introduced to the combustion air introduction zone. The recirculated gas lowers the,temperature of the furnace and this results in reduced NOx generation. Further, since the combustion air flow enters the furnace from the bottom side of the furnace, it is effectively used in incineration.

    • Urban waste is dried and burned in a mechanical grate furnace in a reducing atmosphere to reduce the formation of NO.sub.x. Consumption of the clinker is completed in a well at the base of which a device such as a plasma torch is provided for vitrifying the clinker. The combustion gases are burned in the presence of secondary air in a circulating fluidized bed furnace. Most of the fly ash is removed from the flue gases in a filter before the gases are passed through a boiler in which they are cooled. The flue gases then pass through a conventional cleansing area from which they are evacuated by a stack. There are very low concentrations of harmful products in the flue gases and in the clinker. The fly ash collected on the exit side of the fluidized bed is recycled with the clinker to be vitrified. Heavy metals evaporated in the furnaces are recovered via a purge.

    • Improvements for an incinerator system including double reburn tunnels, an excitor within a reburn tunnel, a choker for closing off part of a reburn tunnel, a grate near the incinerator's inlet to permit the drying and initial combustion of refuse, an ash scoop which remains out of the water during most of its operation. The use of dual reburn tunnels, along with a damper that permits the closure of at least one of them, permits the efficient and environmentally acceptable utilization of the main incinerator chamber even with minimal refuse contained there. With less refuse, only one reburn unit operates; it will still have sufficient heat and throughput to maintain, with minimal auxiliary fuel, the temperatures needed for complete combustion. An excitor, or solid stationary object placed within the reburn tunnel, permits the retention and reflection of the heat generated by the burning to assure complete combustion of all hydrocarbons within the reburn unit. Additionally, the air utilized in the reburn unit may enter through the excitor for the efficient distribution and concomitant combustion.
