    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably guide lubricating oil to a tappet chamber without causing increase of pump driving loss.SOLUTION: A vertical type engine includes an oil pump 95 arranged on a bottom surface 16b side in vertical direction of a cylinder barrel 16 and driven while being interconnected to a bottom end 49b in vertical direction of a cam gear shaft 49; a first lubricating oil passage 91 for supplying lubricating oil sent from the oil pump 95 to a lower bearing 26 of a crankshaft 12; a second lubricating oil passage 92 for passing the lubricating oil through the crankshaft 12 from the lower bearing 26 of the crankshaft 12 to an upper bearing 25; a third lubricating oil passage 93 on a top surface 16a side in a vertical direction of the cylinder barrel 16, and formed from the crankcase 15 to immediately below stem ends 41a, 42a of intake and exhaust valves 35, 36, and through which the lubricating oil leaked from the second lubricating oil passage 92 flows; and a fourth lubricating oil passage 94 for returning, to the oil pump 95, lubricating oil dripped down from the third lubricating oil passage 93 onto the stem ends 41a, 42a of the intake and exhaust valves 35, 36.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an operating resposiveness of a valve timing variable mechanism, enhance a layout property of an engine, reduce in size, and reduce in cost.
      SOLUTION: This four-cycle engine for outboard motor is vertically installed in a state such that a crankshaft and a can shaft 32a are provided in a vertical manner. In the four-cycle engine for outboard motor, a cam shaft driving mechanism 51 which transmits rotation of the crankshaft to the can shaft 32a and a oil pump 70 for lubrication are arranged to a lower side of the engine, and the valve timing variable mechanism 85a and a valve timing control mechanism 84 which receives oil supply from the oil pump 70 to control the valve timing variable mechanism 85a are provided. The valve timing control mechanism 84 is arranged near a lower side of an outside wall (for example, a ceiling surface of a head cover 24) of a valve system chamber 35 in which the cam shaft 32a is built. Further, the valve timing variable mechanism 84 is arranged to a lower end side of the cam shaft 32a and under the cam shaft driving mechanism 51.
