    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine, particularly, a large diesel engine, and further a reciprocating internal combustion engine to be operated by this method.
      SOLUTION: The method is provided to operate a longitudinally scavenging reciprocating internal combustion engine (1), particularly, a large diesel engine. The reciprocating internal combustion engine includes a cylinder (2) having and outlet valve (3) and a scavenging opening designed in the form of a scavenging slot (4), the cylinder being configured so that a piston (5) reciprocates therein along a traveling surface (6) between a bottom dead center (UT) and a top dead center (OT); and a supercharger group (7) for compressing air (11), including a turbine (9) driven by exhaust gas (8) from a combustion chamber (22) of the cylinder. The compressed air is supplied as scavenging air (12) through the scavenging slot to the combustion chamber of the cylinder. When the internal combustion engine is operated in a low-load operation area, the outlet valve (3) is opened, subsequently to combustion step, to introduce exhaust gas (8) to the supercharger group (7).
