    • A convolutional interleaving process which utilizes an addressing scheme that enables the amount of memory to be used in the convolutional interleaving process to be reduced is disclosed. A stream of data is convolutionally interleaved at a designated interleaving depth and a designated interleaving block length such that a first symbol in a designated block has an associated predetermined delay and each subsequent symbol in the designated block has a delay equal to more than its predecessor symbol. A plurality of delay related arrays, as well as an initial value array, a lower limit array, and an upper limit array, are calculated in order to define interleaving orbits. The convolutional interleaving process is accomplished by a convolutional interleaver which is arranged to take an incoming stream of data and output an interleaved stream of bits which is conceptually partitioned into blocks. A convolutional deinterleaving process, which is similar to the convolutional interleaving process is also disclosed.

    • The invention relates to forming transition metrics in a receiver of a digital cellular radio system, the receiver comprising a hardware implementation of a transition metrics calculation unit for Viterbi decoding. The receiver comprises a shift register (41) which stores coefficients of the generator polynomial of the convolutional code. The receiver further comprises masking means (42) which mask the state of the Viterbi decoding by the coefficients of the polynomial. Moreover, the receiver comprises odd parity means (43 and 46) which form a parity bit of the state of the masked Viterbi decoding, the parity bit controlling the block (44 and 45) forming the transition metrics. The solution combines the advantages of software and hardware implementations.

    • A turbo-decoding device which detects an error of a turbo-decoding result even while decoding is repeated and, when no error is detected, outputs a decoding result and cancels the decoding operation even while the decoding operation is repeated. The device monitors the number of detected errors of a decoding result when a decoding is performed a specified number of times and, when the number of detected errors is less than a specified value, performs a decoding operation again. The device selectively outputs one of first and second decoding results respectively output from first and second element decoders constituting a turbo-decoder.
