A receiver is provided with a sequential decoder applicable to wide-area mobile communication. In an equalizer using transversal filters, for paths that are registered at the signal points where tap coefficients are small, that are within the restraint length, and that are old in time, the computation of likelihood values are performed by referring to the history of the preceding paths, thereby necessary computation is greatly reduced.
