摘要： Disclosed are infant formulas and corresponding methods of using them to promote retinal health and vision development in infants. The formulas, which are free of egg phospholipids and comprise fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, and minerals, including docosahexaenoic acid and, on a ready-to-feed basis, at least about 50 mcg/liter of lutein, wherein the weight ratio of lutein (mcg) to docosahexaenoic acid (mg) is from about 1:2 to about 10:1. The formulas are also believed to be especially useful in reducing the risk of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants.

摘要： The present invention provides an improved pediatric formula and methods for providing nutrition to and enhancing tolerance in pediatric patients. The formula may be provided in powder, concentrate or ready-to-feed forms. The pediatric formula comprises, based on a 100 kcal basis, about 8 to about 16 grams carbohydrate (preferably about 9.4 to about 12.3 grams), about 3 to about 6 grams lipid (preferably about 4.7 to about 5.6 grams), about 1.8 to about 3.3 grams protein (preferably about 2.4 to about 3.3 grams), and a tolerance improver comprising about 37 to about 370 milligrams (preferably about 74 to about 222 milligrams, more preferably about 111 to about 148 milligrams) xanthan gum. The formula may also be provided in a powder, which comprises, based on 100 grams of powder, about 30 to about 90 grams carbohydrate (preferably about 48 to about 59 ), about 15 to about 30 grams lipid (preferably 22 to about 28 grams), about 8 to about 17 grams protein (preferably about 11 to about 17), and about 188 to about 1880 milligrams (preferably about 375 to about 1125, more preferably about 375 to about 1125 milligrams) xanthan gum. The formula preferably further comprises vitamins and minerals and may further comprise a stabilizer. The methods comprise administering to a pediatric patient an effective amount of a pediatric formula according to the invention, as described above.

摘要： This invention provides a particulate material suitable for use as a nutritional supplement, particularly as an aquaculture feed. The particulate material has a high proportion of DHA residues in the lipid fraction, which may be up to 35% of the material, or even more. Preferably, the material has a mean particle size of from about 5 microns to about 10 microns. This invention also provides a method for preparing a particulate material suitable for use as an aquaculture feed from microbial biomass, preferably from algal cells having a high content of DHA residues, by obtaining a lipid fraction from the biomass, preferably by solvent extraction of broken cells, followed by separating a fraction containing phospholipids and proteins from the lipid fraction, and removing water from the protein/phospholipid fraction to form a low moisture particulate, preferably by spray-drying the protein/phospholipid fraction.

The protein hydrolysate is useful as a protein extender in animal feed and human nutritional formulations, as well as a source of nitrogen for use in culture media, and as an appetite stimulant. The protein hydrolysate is obtained from animal tissue having an endothelial or mucosal component. Specified constituents are removed from a solution of animal tissue under non-proteolytic conditions. The resulting raw material solution is then digested with a proteolytic enzyme, and thereafter anionic impurities are removed from the digest solution.

摘要： The present invention relates to a DNA sequence encoding the human milk protein beta -casein or an analogue or variant thereof which has either the calcium binding activity of human beta -casein, or opioid activity, or angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, or a combination of any two or three of these activities. The DNA sequence may optionally contain one or more intron sequences and permissive RNA splice signals. The DNA sequence is used in the production of recombinant human beta -casein, advantageously by means of production in transgenic non-human mammals such as bovine species. In one embodiment, the DNA sequence is inserted into a milk protein gene of a mammal such as a whey acidic protein (WAP) gene. The main use of the recombinant human beta -casein is as a constituent of infant formulae. It is contemplated that the recombinant human beta -casein provides a substantial improvement of the nutritional and biological value of the formulae in that a closer similarity to human milk is obtained.

摘要： The present invention is directed to methods and compositions for noninvasively administering drugs in a dose-to-effect manner to produce a cardiovascular or renal vascular activity. A cardiovascular or renal vascular drug, which is capable of absorption through mucosal tissues of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus is incorporated into a matrix which is in the form of a lollipop. A patient is put at ease when given the lollipop, and the drug rapidly enters the patient's bloodstream as the lollipop is sucked. When treating the patient, the physician can observe the patient's condition and remove the lollipop when it has had a desired effect on the patient. A lollipop into which a cardiovascular or renal vascular drug has been dispersed is particularly useful for achieving rapid vasodilating, calcium channel blocking, beta-blocking, seritonin receptor blocking, angina blocking, anti-hypertensive, and cardiac stimulating effects and for controlling urine output.
