    • Aspects of the invention for posting buffers for a non-posting TCP application may comprise posting at least one generic buffer located in a memory external to a host adapter and transferring incoming data for a TCP connection to the posted generic buffer prior to the non-posting TCP application posting a TCP application buffer for the incoming data. At least one generic buffer may be allocated from a pool of available generic buffers upon receipt of the incoming TCP connection data. At least a portion of the incoming data may be stored in the allocated generic buffer if the TCP application buffer is unable to accommodate the incoming data. The method may further determining whether the incoming data for the TCP connection transferred to the posted generic buffer is in sequence and ordering the incoming data based on a sequence number if the incoming data is out of sequence.

    • A universal software driver apparatus (PCS), and method for use thereof, that enables universal data handling for a variety of protocol-processor pairs. At the core of the PCS is the premise that in various protocol driver software codes, many of the customized functions (protocol and processor specific) feature similar structures or patterns. The PCS provides a universal structure for these functions, which supports a variety of protocols and processors (502) and enables a plurality of physical channels supported by the processor (502). Additional embodiments of the PCS include adding functional components to the universal core (501), including a scanner component, initialization component, memory management system (540), universal tracing system (550), data analysis tool and/or a universal FIFO management component (545).

    • A method and apparatus for reducing performance overhead of a media server sending packetized audio/video data to an end-player or user is provided. The main sources of performance overhead associated with a media server transmitting packetized audio/video data are (1) copying data from the user space buffer to the kernel buffer and (2) context switching from user level to kernel level. There are several techniques that can be used to address overhead. One technique involves creating an aggregate packet, which includes a policy, at the user level and transmitting this aggregate packet from the user level to the OS level with a system call. A second technique involves manipulating packets based on a policy in the OS level rather than in the user level. The manipulation of packets may include redirecting packets or splitting packets.

    • A system and method are provided for randomly discarding a packet received at a high performance network interface if the rate of packet transfers cannot keep pace with the rate of packet arrivals. A selected packet may be dropped as it arrives at a packet queue, or a packet already in the queue may be discarded. The queue has multiple defined regions, any of which may overlap or share a common boundary. A probability indicator is associated with a region to specify the probability of a packet being discarded when the level of traffic in the queue is within the region. Probability indicators may differ from region to region so that the probability of discarding a packet fluctuates as the level of traffic stored in the queue changes. Information gleaned from a packet may be applied to prevent certain types of packets from being dropped.
