    • The present invention relates to a powered axle gear (I) for a motor vehicle. The object is to achieve an axle gear which can cope with large driving torques and at the same time be accommodated in an axle beam between the vehicle's tractive wheels. The axle gear comprises a gear housing (10) which accommodates a pinion (40) and a crownwheel (50) for transmission of rotary motion to the vehicle's powered axles (Y1, Y2). To this end, there are two bearings (62, 64), one on each side of the crownwheel (50) and the pinion's centreline (X), with a differential situated between said bearings (62, 64). The bearing (64) situated beyond both the crownwheel (50) and the pinion's centreline (X) has running round it an undivided bearing seat (30) provided with a portion running in the circumferential direction which protrudes over the pinion (40) towards the latter's centreline (X) in a configuration which at least partly overlaps the pinion (40). The invention relates also to a motor vehicle.

    • A bearing preload adjuster assembly can include a first annular member defining a first outer wall having a threaded region and a first inner wall having a plurality of first ramped surfaces formed thereon. The first outer wall can threadably engage a corresponding threaded region of an axle assembly. A second annular member can define a second outer wall having a plurality of second ramped surfaces formed thereon and can be received in the first annular member such that the second outer wall faces the first inner wall. A biasing member can bias the second annular member in a first axial direction such that the plurality of second ramped surfaces are in selective meshed engagement with the plurality of first ramped surfaces. A retaining member can be coupled to the first inner wall and can retain the biasing member and second annular member within the first annular member.

    • A shaft (4) rotates in a housing (2) on two single row tapered roller bearings (12, 14) mounted in opposition such that the raceways (30, 36) of the one bearing taper downwardly toward the raceways (30, 36) of the other bearing. The metal from which the housing is formed has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the metal from which the shaft and bearings are formed. The bearings are set to preload to stabilize the axis of rotation. To prevent the cups (22) (outer races) of the bearings from becoming loose as a consequence of differential thermal expansion between the housing and shaft, the cups are provided with beveled back faces (42) which abut beveled shoulders (58) at the ends of bearing seats (52, 54) in the housing. As the housing expands radially and perhaps eliminates radial interference fits between the cups and housing, the housing also expands axially and maintains the beveled shoulders of the bearing seats firmly abutted against the beveled back faces of the cups, so that the cups do not displace either axially or radially.
