    • A pretensioner arrangement for a vehicle safety belt includes a safety belt retractor (12,14) comprising a retractor reel (14) mounted for rotation in a retractor frame (12) and a pretensioner actuator (16) including a first rotary output member (18) connected with the retractor reel by way of a first dutch arrangement, and a second rotary output member (28) connected with the retractor reel by way of a second dutch arrangement, the clutch arrangements being such that the output members (18,28) can apply successive displacements to the retractor reel. The first rotary output member (18) is coupled with a first rotary piston (44) mounted within a working cylinder (42) having a first input (50) for pressurized gas to drive the rotary piston (44) and first output member (18), and the second rotary output member (28) is coupled with a second rotary piston (46) mounted within the same working cylinder (42) which has a second input (51) for gas produced by a pyrotechnic gas generator when the latter is fired. A first, pre-crash sensor may trigger opening of a valve connecting the first input (50) with a source of pressurized gas, whilst the pyrotechnic gas generator may be triggered by forces substantially greater than those triggering the last noted valve, such as forces arising in an actual impact of the vehicle in which the arrangement is fitted.

    • A safety arrangement is provided in a motor vehicle. The motor vehicle has a floor pan (1 ) terminating at its forward end with an inclined splash-wall (3, 4, 5). There is a moveable floor element (10) which has regions (12, 13, 14) which initially conform to and lie adjacent the splash-wall. There is a drive arrangement (15) associated with an accident sensor (16) to drive the moveable floor element rearwardly to a predetermined position. There is a fixed platform (17) located above a horizontal part of the floor pan to be located beneath the foot of a vehicle occupant and to provide a secure point for operation of a pedal. The movement of the moveable floor element (10) is restricted so that no part of the movable floor element impedes movement of a foot pedal (6) to the fully depressed condition.

    • An air-bag (10) is provided for protecting an occupant of a seat of a motor vehicle. The air-bag is to be mounted to the vehicle by mountings (11). When inflated the air-bag extends downwardly from the roof of the vehicle to occupy a position in front of an occupant of the seat of a vehicle. Each mounting (11) is adapted to release the inflatable element (10) in response to a force having a substantial forward component applied to the air-bag, or in a response to an accident situation when a seat of the vehicle is occupied by an un-belted seat occupant. If there is an un-belted occupant, the air-bag in front of the occupant will be disconnected from the roof, preventing undesirable neck injuries occurring. If the seat occupant is belted, then the air-bag will remain in position in front of the occupant.
