    • An inflator for an airbag comprises a bottle (2) containing a pressurised oxidisable gas and a bottle (4) containing a pressurised oxidising gas, the bottles being connected with a structure (12) providing a chamber (14) including a conduit (18) for connection with a vehicle airbag. The bottles have respective discharge openings (18) sealed by respective metal foils (20) and the inflator includes a mechanism including a pyrotechnic squib which, when fired, propels a piston (28) along a cylinder (24) to release arms (30) supporting the foils (20) so that they no longer do so and thus allow the foils to be ruptured by gas pressure. To ignite the gases thus released, into the chamber (14), a piston rod (34) of the piston, extending within chamber (14) an igniter tube so that when and the squib is ignited and the foils are broken, burning gases from the squib will be discharged through the piston rod tube (34) to ignite the mixture of gases discharged from the bottles. The piston rod tube (34) may have one or more ports or holes (46) in the wall thereof through which the gas mixture can be drawn into the tube by the flow of igniter squib gases therealong, to commence combustion of the gases from said bottles during transport of these gases along the igniter tube (34).

    • An inflator for an air-bag comprises at least one gas bottle (1, 2) containing pressurised gas. The gas bottle is sealed by a rupturable foil (9). There is a support member (15) engaging the rupturable foil to maintain it in an unruptured state. The support member (15) is retained in an initial position by a part (23) of a piston element (20) which directly engages the support member (15). The piston element (20) is associated with a squib (11) to drive the piston element from an initial position to a release position in which the piston element no longer engages the support member (15). This permits the support member (15) to move to a position in which the foil (9) will rupture to permit gas to escape from the bottle. The preferred embodiment has two gas bottles each sealed by a respective foil each maintained by a support member which directly engages a single piston member.

In this way, and by selecting the relative sizes of the first and further discharge openings (18,18a) the inflation rate of the air bag with respect to time can be fitted to a desired profile.
