    • The present invention comprises a process of preparing a solution of an enhanced efficacy aluminum antiperspirant salt in a polyhydric alcohol by (a) providing an aqueous solution consisting essentially of about 5 % to about 18 % by weight of an enhanced efficacy aluminum antiperspirant salt in water, the enhanced efficacy aluminum antiperspirant salt having been prepared in situ without having been dried to a solid powder; (b) mixing the aqueous solution with a sufficient amount of a liquid polyhydric alcohol to provide a mixed solution which has an antiperspirant salt to polyhydric alcohol ratio of about 1:4 to about 1.2:1; and (c) rapidly evaporating the water from the mixed solution under vacuum to provide a final liquid polyhydric alcohol solution containing about 20 to 50 % enhanced efficacy aluminum antiperspirant salt and about 2 to 16 % water, with the balance being polyhydric alcohol. An alkaline glycinate salt, such as sodium, potassium or zinc glycinate, may be added to the polyhydric alcohol prior to the addition of the antiperspirant salt solution in order to raise the pH of the recovered product to about 4.1 to 5.0.

    • The present invention provides a process for making a solid antiperspirant stick comprising a particulate aluminum antiperspirant salt suspended in an anhydrous carrier vehicle, wherein said carrier vehicle comprises a high melting component which melts at 70 DEG C or higher. This process includes heating the carrier vehicle in a closed mixing vessel to a temperature in excess of 70 DEG C, preferably in excess of 75 DEG C, to melt the high melting component, adding the antiperspirant salt to the carrier vehicle, and cooling the carrier vehicle to form a solid antiperspirant stick. The improvement of the present invention comprises cooling the carrier vehicle below 70 DEG C, preferably to about 65 DEG C or less, but above the solidification point prior to adding the antiperspirant salt and maintaining the carrier vehicle below 70 DEG C, preferably at about 65 DEG C or less, during and after the antiperspirant salt addition, thereby substantially preventing agglomeration of the antiperspirant salt into large particles, especially particles in excess of 60 microns.

    • Disclosed are enhanced efficacy aluminum-zirocnium antiperspirant salt compositions which exhiit an HPLC peak 5 area content of about 33 % or more, preferably at least 45 %, more preferably at least 50 %, most preferably at least 55 %. Especially preferred are aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salt composition which, in addition to the aforementioned high peak 5 content, also exhibit an HPLC peak 4 to peak 3 area ratio of at least 0.4, preferably at least 0.7. The aforementioned salt compositions will preferably have a metal (Al + Zr) to chloride (or anion) ratio of about 0.90 to about 1.00. Also disclosed are methods of making such antiperspirant salt compositions and aqueous solutions of such antiperspirant sald compositions. Further disclosed are topical compositions comprising a dermatologically acceptable carrier vehicle and a perspiration reducing effective amount of an aluminium-zirconium antiperspirant salt composition as described above.
