    • An inflator device including a pressure vessel forming a gas storage chamber having contents including a supply of stored pressurized gas. The pressure vessel forms a gas exit opening at a first end of the pressure vessel. An initiator assembly includes an initiator cover that extends through a sidewall of the pressure vessel at a first end portion of the pressure vessel, such that at least a portion of the initiator cover extends radially inwardly into the gas storage chamber. An initiator is positioned within the initiator cover, and produces a discharge effective to rupture a rupturable closure element normally covering the gas exit opening to allow flow of at least a portion of the gas storage chamber contents through the gas exit opening. A first radial aperture formed in the initiator cover is positioned at a direct discharge distance with respect to the closure element to focus the initiator discharge at the closure element to rupture the closure element. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the inflator device also includes a supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material contained within the gas storage chamber, wherein at least a portion of the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material is reactable to produce a product gas. A second aperture is formed in the initiator cover, and is in reaction initiation communication with the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material.

    • An airbag module assembly including a module housing, a door and a door retainer ring. The module housing forms a compartment adapted to contain an inflatable restraint airbag cushion in a stored state. The module housing has at least one open end, and includes at least one side wall and at least one face wall generally perpendicularly disposed relative to the at least one side wall about the at least one open end. The door retainer ring is adapted to be joined to the module housing about the module housing open end. The door includes a circumference portion and has an inner surface and an outer surface. The door, in a static state, is disposed over the module housing to enclose the module housing open end with at least the circumference portion of the door disposed between the door retainer ring and the module housing. The circumference portion of the door includes at least one release portion and at least one hinge section. In the assembly, upon inflation of the inflatable restraint airbag cushion, the inflatable restraint airbag cushion expands against the inner surface of the door, whereby at least the release portion is displaced from between the door retaining ring and the module housing with the door rotatably hinging about the at least one hinge section.

    • An airbag module (10) may have an inflator (42), a cushion (40), and a housing (46) that contains the inflator (42) and the cushion (40). The housing has an outer wall formed of a flexible material and a bracket designed to be attached to a vehicle. During deployment, the cushion is expelled out of the housing through the bracket. The inflator remains in the housing and inflation gas is conveyed to the cushion through the housing. The inflator may be retained by flaps wrapped around the inflator and secured to a perpendicularly oriented diffuser of the inflator. Alternatively, the diffuser may extend through an orifice formed in a fabric wall within the housing, and retention portions of the outer wall may be wrapped around the opposite side of the inflator. The airbag module may be mounted in an instrument panel to provide front seat, passenger's side impact protection without requiring a rigid module housing.

    • A vibration damper gasket is provided for a vibration damper gasket mounting an airbag inflator within an airbag module such that the airbag inflator may serve as a vibration damper for the vehicle. The vibration damper gaskets include a mounting ring sized and designed to fit about the edge of an airbag inflator flange. The mounting ring generally includes upper and lower retention arms and an adapter groove positioned between the retention arms for receiving the edge of the airbag inflator flange. The mounting ring also has a compression column provided on an outside surface of the mounting ring to allow the gasket to be compression-mounted within a vehicle. The vibration damper gaskets of the invention additionally include at least one inflator ground extending along an inside surface of the mounting ring from at least an upper contact surface of the upper retention arm continuously across the adapter groove to a lower contact surface of the lower retention arm. This inflator ground serves to ground the airbag inflator and prevent unintentional initiation of the inflator which may be caused by built-up electrical charges.
