    • A combination articulated vehicle damping system (10) for absorbing the kinetic energy of the trail vehicle (16) during a collision. Affixed to the trail vehicle (16) is a damping material retaining means (30) that holds a damping material (40). The back of the damping material retaining means (30) engages the rear end of the damping material (40). A slider frame (50) is slidably mounted in the damping material retaining means (30) and engages the damping material (40). A shearable fastening means (60) prevents the slider frame (50) from moving relative to the damping material retaining means (30) until subjected to a predetermined force. Secured to the slider frame (50) is the connector means (18) for coupling the lead vehicle to the trail vehicle (16). Once the combination articulated vehicle is subjected to a predetermined force, the shearable fastening means (60) breaks allowing the slider frame (50) to move and thereby deform the damping material (40). The deformation of the damping material (40) absorbs the kinetic energy of the trail vehicle (16).

    • A crash impact attenuator (10) designed to be mounted on a service truck or other vehicle including a perimeter band (12), preferably with an elongated profile having generally arcuate ends (14, 16) spaced from each other and interconnected by opposing links of side walls (18, 20). At substantially the center of the side walls, a loop of cable (28) or similar high tension material is provided to limit any separation of the side walls from each other. Considering one of the two arcuate ends of the perimeter band as constituting the front of the crash impact attenuator, the front of the attenuator and the other of the two arcuate ends of the perimeter band as constituting the back of the crash impact attenuator is bolted or otherwise connected to the service vehicle to protect it from impact and the rear of the impact attenuator cantilevers out form the rear of the service vehicle and is spaced above the surface over which the service vehicle is travelling.

    • An impact attenuation system which uses vertically standing, hollow, cylindrical energy dissipators (16, 18) having elliptical shaped cross sections. The cylindrical energy dissipators (16, 18) can be used in connection with prior art impact attenuation systems which used round cylinders. In one application, the protected structure is a truck (12) and the system is attached to the truck (12) by a series of brackets (32). A brace (34) is pivotally attached to the bracket (32) and a plate (36) is attached to the brace (34). One or more elliptical cylinders (16, 18) are attached to the plate such that the minor diameters of the elliptical cylinders run substantially parallel to the plate and the major diameters of the elliptical cylinders (16, 18) run substantially perpendicular to the plate. A radial slit (50) is cut out of the rear most cylinders (18) proximate to the top and the bottom. The slits (50) are arcuate and extend substantially about the back half of the rear-most cylinder (18).
