    • An active stick apparatus (40) includes a stick housing (41) and a stick control member (42) pivotally mounted to the stick housing (41) at a pivot point (43). The pivot point (43) acts to divide the stick control member (42) into a first member section (44) and a second member section (45). The pivot point (43) allows the stick control member (42) to pivot with respect to the stick housing (41), as indicated by directional arrows (46) and (47). An actuator (50) is attached to the first member section (44) at an end distal from the pivot point (43). The actuator (50) is arranged to act as a counterbalance to movement of the stick control member (42) about the pivot point (43) under acceleration forces asserted on the stick control member (42). The output axle drive (52) of the actuator (50) is fixedly coupled to a first section (53) of a drive link (54) and a second section (55) of the drive link (54) is pivotally coupled to a first section (56) of a mounting linkage (57). A second section (58) of the mounting linkage (57) is pivotally coupled to the stick housing (41). Coupling of the actuator (50) to the first member section mitigates the requirement for a conventional lump mass.

    • Driving and steering means of a wheeled, power driven vehicle, such as a power driven hospital bed, is actuated by an actuating device (30). This actuating device comprises a base member (31) and an actuating member (32) having gripping means, such as a pair of spaced handles (33), and being supported by the base member so as to be displaceable thereon along a plane. A first force transducer (34) is arranged to receive a force component manually applied to the actuating member in a predetermined first direction only, along said plane, and a second force transducer (38) is arranged to receive a force component manually applied to the actuating member in a predetermined second direction only, transversely to the first direction along said plane. Each of these force transducers is adapted to generate an output signal to the driving and steering means responsive to the strength of the force component received. Preferably, the first and second directions extend at mutual right angles, and one of the directions extends in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.

    • An active inceptor apparatus and method for operating a machine. The apparatus comprises a stick member having a grip portion, the stick member being pivotably mounted relative to a housing. It further comprises a position sensor responsive to, and for generating signals indicative of, stick member position. A force sensor is provided on the stick member responsive to, and for generating signals indicative of, force applied to the stick by a user. The apparatus also includes a control unit operable to receive the position and force signals from the position and force sensors respectively. The control unit is operable to process the signals according to a predetermined relationship to determine a value FD indicative of force applied to the stick member relative to displacement of the stick member. The control unit is also operable to generate machine control signals as a function of position signals and force signals in dependence upon the value FD, for communication to the machine.

    • A human interface device is provided, having a substrate. A strain sensitive die is coupled to the substrate wherein the die is capable of providing an electrical signal indicative of a force applied to the strain sensitive die. A force transfer element is positioned adjacent to the strain sensitive die and coupled to the strain sensitive die. A translation element is mechanically coupled to the force transfer element. An elastic element is at least partially surrounding the translation element and the force transfer element, wherein the elastic element provides the mechanical coupling between the translation element and the force transfer element. A force applied to the translation element causes stretching of the elastic element, wherein the stretching of the elastic element causes a force to be applied to the force transfer element; and wherein the force applied to the force transfer element by the elastic element is then applied to the strain sensitive die.
