    • A crank angle detector includes a first generator 2 for sequentially generating a first signal including a plurality of first pulses corresponding to the number of engine cylinders in two crankshaft revolutions, and a second generator 3 for generating a second signal in two revolutions including a plurality of groups of second pulses, each group of second pulses having a condition which corresponds to a specific period of the first signal and which is different from those of the other groups. A cylinder discriminator 4 is connected to the first and second generators for discriminating the operating strokes of the respective cylinders by detecting a specific pulse condition of the second signal which occurs within a specific period of the first signal. In a preferred embodiment, each of the second pulses has a width less than that of each pulse of the first signal, and each group of second pulses has a total sum of rising and falling edges which is different from that of each of the other groups. Preferably, the crank angle signal has a period in which the first signal is alternatively at a low level or at a high level.

    • An automotive engine control system is provided for an automobile having a variable rotation speed engine which has a plurality of spark plugs served by respective spark plugs. The system includes an optical rotary encoder having a rotatable pulse scale having a row of code pattern with specific light-permeable or light-deflection slits each for outputting a reference position signal and other light-permeable or light-reflection slits each adapted to reduce the amount of light for outputting an angular signal, both of the optical signals being photoelectronically converted and the waveform of the resultant electric signals being shaped based on threshold voltages into electric pulse signals indicative of a reference angle of 0.degree. and the accumulated angle of rotation, in which the circumferential width of each specific reference slit is made narrower than that of other slit so that the pulse width for angular position-indicating of the angular pulse signal is always equal and constant for ensuring more accurate detection of the angle of rotation. As the engine rotation speed is sensed to speed up and slow down, by a sensor that is operatively connected with the engine, the optical rotary encoder varies igniting of the spark plugs.

    • A knock suppressing apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes an amplifier that amplifies the output signal of a knock sensor for sensing engine vibrations. A vibration level signal and a threshold signal are generated based on the amplifier output signals, and knocking is detected by comparing the vibration level signal and the threshold signal. The gain of the amplifier is varied in accordance with an operating condition indicative of the noise level of the engine so as to maintain the vibration level signal and the threshold signal within prescribed ranges suitable for knock determination. In one form of the invention, when the amplifier gain is varied, the threshold signal is also varied at substantially the same time and by substantially the same percentage as the amplifier gain.

    • An ignition timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine capable of using as a fuel a regular (low-octane) gasoline, a premium (high-octane) gasoline, or a mixture of both type of gasolines. The engine produces knocks when the ignition timing is advanced beyond a reference ignition timing determined as a function of the type of gasoline being used. This advance ignition timing control apparatus detects the knocks, and provides as an output therefrom a signal according to the occurrence rate of the knocks which essentially indicates the type of gasoline in use. By means of this signal, this ignition timing control apparatus continuously displaces the reference ignition timing in the direction of retard angle by using a proportion factor calculator and an interpolator. At the same time, the displaced reference ignition timing is corrected by the detected knock signals on a real time basis. The combined ignition timing signal serves to energize an ignition coil to suppress the occurrence of knocks. This operation will continue until no knocks occur.

    • A knock deriving apparatus for an internal combustion engine wherein only a knock signal is precisely derived from the output signal of a knock sensor including a noise signal component by the provision of first and second frequency filters serially connected to the knock sensor. The first frequency filter has a band width wider than that of the second frequency filter to cover a resonant noise. The resultant band width by the series combination of both filters is set to just cover a frequency band where knocks occur. The output of the first frequency filter is converted to a comparative reference signal which is compared in a comparator with the output of the second filter, thereby deriving a stable knock signal.
