    • An ignition timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine capable of using as a fuel a regular (low-octane) gasoline, a premium (high-octane) gasoline, or a mixture of both type of gasolines. The engine produces knocks when the ignition timing is advanced beyond a reference ignition timing determined as a function of the type of gasoline being used. This advance ignition timing control apparatus detects the knocks, and provides as an output therefrom a signal according to the occurrence rate of the knocks which essentially indicates the type of gasoline in use. By means of this signal, this ignition timing control apparatus continuously displaces the reference ignition timing in the direction of retard angle by using a proportion factor calculator and an interpolator. At the same time, the displaced reference ignition timing is corrected by the detected knock signals on a real time basis. The combined ignition timing signal serves to energize an ignition coil to suppress the occurrence of knocks. This operation will continue until no knocks occur.

    • A knock deriving apparatus for an internal combustion engine wherein only a knock signal is precisely derived from the output signal of a knock sensor including a noise signal component by the provision of first and second frequency filters serially connected to the knock sensor. The first frequency filter has a band width wider than that of the second frequency filter to cover a resonant noise. The resultant band width by the series combination of both filters is set to just cover a frequency band where knocks occur. The output of the first frequency filter is converted to a comparative reference signal which is compared in a comparator with the output of the second filter, thereby deriving a stable knock signal.

    • A knock suppressing apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes an amplifier that amplifies the output signal of a knock sensor for sensing engine vibrations. A vibration level signal and a threshold signal are generated based on the amplifier output signals, and knocking is detected by comparing the vibration level signal and the threshold signal. The gain of the amplifier is varied in accordance with an operating condition indicative of the noise level of the engine so as to maintain the vibration level signal and the threshold signal within prescribed ranges suitable for knock determination. In one form of the invention, when the amplifier gain is varied, the threshold signal is also varied at substantially the same time and by substantially the same percentage as the amplifier gain.

    • A knock sensor detects the vibration of an internal combustion engine and the half wave of its output of the sensor is amplified by a half wave amplifier. From the amplified output, a vibration-signal producing circuit produces a vibration signal representative of the vibration of engine in synchronism with the crank angle. An arithmetic operation unit produces a reference signal. Then a comparator compares the reference signal with the vibration signal to output a knock signal indicative of the occurrence of knocking of the engine when the vibration signal exceeds the reference signal. A gain adjusting circuit may be provided between the knock sensor and the half wave amplifier for adjusting the input level to the half wave amplifier to set the output level of the amplifier to a proper level. The half wave amplifier may be provided with a gain selecting circuit which automatically changes the gain of half wave amplifier in accordance with the level of the knock sensor output. The gain selecting circuit increases the gain when the sensor output is lower than a predetermined level and decreases when the sensor output is higher than a predetermined level. An inverse transformation circuit may be provided after the half wave amplifier having the gain selecting circuit, so that the level of vibration signal is compressed when the gain of half wave amplifier is increased, and the level is expanded when the gain is decreased so as to reproduce a vibration signal proportional to the knock sensor output,
