    • Shredded tobacco is supplied from a storage reservoir to one or more cigarette making machines by way of discrete pneumatic conveying pipes. The reservoir receives fresh tobacco at regular or irregular intervals so that the quantity of tobacco in its interior is constant. The contents of the reservoir are maintained in suspension so that at least the major part of the supply of tobacco shreds forms a fluidized bed which is located directly below the intakes of the conveying pipes. When a machine requires a batch of tobacco shreds, the respective pipe is connected to a suction generating device so that it draws air from the region between the underside of the fluidized bed and the upper side of the bottom wall of the reservoir whereby the ascending current of air entrains tobacco particles directly from the fluidized bed. The supply of tobacco in the reservoir can be converted into a fluidized bed by mechanically agitating the reservoir so that the shreds move up and down and/or by causing a plurality of streamlets of compressed air to rise through perforations in the bottom wall of the reservoir. The latter may have a circular, semicircular or polygonal cross-sectional outline.

    • The discharge end of a supply conduit for a mixture of tobacco particles and air communicates with the top portion of a hollow cylindrical housing for a driven cell wheel whose cells are subdivided into inner and outer chambers by impermeable partitions. The outer chamber of each preceding cell communicates with the inner chamber of the respective next-following cell by way of a sieve which forms part of the corresponding vane of the cell wheel. The outlet for tobacco particles is disposed at the lowermost point of the housing and communicates with successive outer chambers, the same as the discharge end of the supply conduit. A suction pipe for evacuation of gaseous carrier medium has an intake end which is coaxial with the wheel and communicates with successive inner chambers at a level above the axis of the wheel so that the inner chambers of cells whose outer chambers discharge tobacco particles into the outlet are sealed from the suction pipe. The discharge end of the supply conduit has a wall portion which deflects particles of tobacco onto successive partitions of the wheel. A pipe for admission of compressed air which cleans the sieves communicates with successive inner chambers in the region of the outlet for tobacco particles.

    • The particles of a continuous tobacco stream are conditioned during transport through a vibratory conveyor having a bottom wall located above a stationary chamber which receives conditioned air from one or more blowers. The bottom wall is formed with apertures through which the air passes across the tobacco stream in the form of pulsating currents which agitate the particles of the stream to insure a pronounced energy exchange between tobacco particles and air. The currents pulsate due to vibration of the bottom wall relative to the chamber, and the latter is provided with transversely extending baffles which insure that the tobacco stream is traversed by air currents having different intensities. The same result can be achieved by forming the bottom wall with larger and smaller apertures. The vibratory conveyor has two sections in the first of which the particles of tobacco are contracted by air having a temperature and moisture content corresponding to the desired temperature and moisture content of conditioned tobacco. The air which has been used for heating of tobacco in the first conveyor section is intercepted and is thereupon conditioned prior to admission into the second conveyor section.
