    • An adjustable seat assembly for an automobile comprises a seat portion which is slidably mounted for movement between fore and aft adjusted positions within a passenger compartment of the automobile. A pair of elongated power screws under the seat portion adjust the fore and aft position of the seat assembly in response to a reversible rotary input from a universal motor. The seat portion includes a pair of internal air bladders which independently inflate and deflate to adjust the height and tilt of the seat portion. A backrest portion extends upwardly from the seat portion, and may include a pneumatic lumbar adjustment device and other contour-adjusting air bladders. The universal motor operates both the power screws and the pneumatic adjustment devices. A transmission is operatively connected to the universal motor for selectively transmitting reversible rotary input to the power screws and pressurized fluid to any one of the pneumatic adjustment devices. The transmission includes a pinion sidably disposed along the spline of the universal motor output shaft, and a pair of spur gears disposed one each on a pneumatic pump and a rotary power take-off. A shuttle forces the pinion between alternating engagement with the spur gears. Every other tooth of the pinion is relieved at its ends to facilitate running engagement without an intermediate clutch. In an alternative embodiment of the transmission, an intermediate clutch is stationed between the output shaft of the universal motor and the pinion, and the pneumatic pump is continuously engaged with the universal motor but vents to atmosphere when the clutch is engaged.

    • The seat back flanges (32) mount a seat back (34) to a seat frame for reclining movement relative to the seat frame and a control mechanism controls the pivotal movement of the seat back (34). The control mechanism includes a tubular cylinder (54) and a first coil spring (56) is wound around and in gripping engagement with the cylinder (54). The cylinder (54) is non-rotatably secured to the seat frame by being welded or otherwise secured to the flanges (32). The first coil spring (56) has first (58) and second (60) ends extending tangentially from the cylinder (54). A second coil spring (62) is wound in the opposite direction around and is in gripping engagement with the cylinder (54) and, likewise, has third (64) and fourth (66) ends extending tangentially from the cylinder (54). A cam shaft (72) is included for moving the second end (60) relative to the first end (58) for unwinding the first coil spring (56) in a clockwise direction from the gripping engagement with the cylinder (54) to allow the pivotal movement of the seat back (34) relative to the seat frame and for moving the fourth end (66) relative to the third end (64) for unwinding the second coil spring (62) in a counterclockwise direction from the gripping engagement with the cylinder (54) to allow the pivotal movement of the seat back relative to the seat frame.

    • A front seat assembly (10), comprising first and second seats, is to be installed as a unit into a vehicle (12). The adjustable furnishing system comprises a mounting structure carried by the wall, a support frame having opposite first and second ends, and a furnishing carried by the support frame. The first end of the support frame releasably attaches to the mounting structure and the mounting structure supports the support frame in a cantilevered position with the second end extending outwardly from the wall with the furnishing carried thereon.
