    • An intake manifold arrangement for internal combustion engines whereby the combustion chamber can be supercharged without the use of mechanical gears and/or pumps. A pressure chamber is mounted upon the combustion chamber and communicates with the combustion chamber and an air and fuel mixture supply. A check valve for selectively allowing the mixture to enter the pressure chamber is provided between the air and fuel supply and the pressure chamber. An intake valve for providing selective communication between the pressure chamber and the combustion chamber is provided and controlled by the compression ratio control mechanism. The compression ratio control mechanism includes an axially slidable cam having a lifting surface of greater duration axially at one end of the cam than the other end of the cam. The cam is selectively axially shifted by an accelerator pedal which controls a hydraulic piston coupled to the cam. The intake valve is opened during the intake stroke and the mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber. The pressure chamber is pressurized during the compression stroke while the intake valve is open and the compression ratio in the combustion chamber is selectively controlled by closing the intake valve at a point during the compression stroke by the selectively slidable cam. An exhaust boost or scavenging arrangement is provided whereby pressurized air is selectively forced into the combustion chamber.

    • An internal combustion engine including a combustion chamber, an intake system having an intake valve and an intake passage leading through the intake valve to the combustion chamber for providing a supply of intake gas to the combustion chamber. A valve timing control device is provided for governing opening and closing timings of the intake valve so that the intake valve is closed at a controlled timing in the compression stroke, whereby a controlled amount of the intake gas is returned from the combustion chamber to the intake passage in the compression stroke to thereby control the effective charge to the combustion chamber. A detecting device is provided for detecting at least one factor which is related to engine speed and producing an engine speed signal, and a manually operated reference setting device for determining a reference value together with, an engine overrun preventing device for comparing the engine speed signal with the reference value and retarding the closing timing of the intake valve to thereby decrease the effective charge when the engine speed signal is greater than the reference value.

    • A supercharged internal combustion engine comprising a combustion chamber of which volume cyclically changes in response to a rotation of the engine to conduct engine operating strokes including an intake and compression strokes, an intake system for supplying intake gas to the combustion chamber.     • A manifold for an internal combustion engine comprises a plurality of body parts each formed as an integral casting by pressure casting. A first body part has a mounting flange for the manifold, a plurality of open channels communicating with respective apertures in the mounting flange, and a water chamber communicating with a port in the flange and a further port in the first body part. A second body part overlies the channels so that the first and second body parts define a plurality of gas conduits effecting communication between the apertures and a common orifice. The first and second parts are sealed together along opposed side faces adjacent their outer peripheral edges. The seal along opposing sides allows access to the joints from the exterior of the assembly, permitting connection by electron beam welding or an adhesive, since all the joints are located on the exterior of the assembly a smoother interior surface is preserved and visual inspection of each joint is possible as it is made.

    • A control system is adapted for an internal combustion engine in which a jet of air is injected into each combustion chamber via a second intake valve during each exhaust cycle and the subsequent intake cycle. The system comprises a source of compressed air having a pressure to be varied in accordance with the engine speed, an injection passageway leading from the source toward each second intake valve and a flow controller operated in accordance with changes in intake manifold vacuum. The flow controller includes a scheduled flow area therethrough to increase, under conditions in which the engine speed is constant, the amount of air passing through the injection passageway in accordance with increasing engine load in such a way as to increase the ratio of air flow through the injection passageway to the intake air flow to the engine under light engine load in order to cope with increasing residual gas fraction within each combustion chamber when the engine idles or operates under deceleration of the vehicle.
