For simplicity of manufacture and assembly combined with functional durability it is proposed that the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) is cylindrical on the inside and that the axle stub (2) fits into the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) with an externally corresponding cylindrical connecting section (5). Further, the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) is radially clamped on to the connecting section (5) of the axle stub (2) by at least one clamping piece (6) that is adjustable in an axial direction to the end (12) of the axle tube (1) by a threaded bolt (8).

    • An axle spindle nut assembly secures a wheel end assembly on an axle spindle. The wheel end assembly includes outboard and inboard outboard bearings that are immovably mounted on the axle spindle, and a wheel hub which is rotatably mounting on the bearings. The spindle nut assembly includes a nut that threads onto an outboard end of the axle spindle, and is tightened against the outboard bearing to a selected torque level. The nut includes an outboard surface that is formed with a plurality of features. A washer is formed with a tab that engages a keyway of the axle spindle outboardly of the nut, and with a plurality of mating features that mechanically engage the features formed in the outboard surface of the nut to prevent substantial rotation of the nut after the nut has been tightened to the selected torque level.

    • A fixture and method for replacing brake spiders on heavy duty vehicle and truck axles includes fixture having an assembly with a flat reference surface and two internal bores just slightly larger than the respective inner and outer bearing surfaces on the axle having a damaged brake spider. The fixture also includes longitudinally adjustable rods or fingers. The method comprises the steps of determining a reference distance between a feature of the axle and the brake. The damaged spider is removed from the axle with, for example, an oxy-acetylene torch. Next, a replacement spider is temporarily attached to the rods or fingers which are adjusted to locate the replacement spider at the previously determined reference distance. The fixture and the spider are then placed on the axle. The spider is then tack welded to the axle, the fixture is removed and the spider is securely welded to the axle.
