    • An inner line (11) conducting the exhaust gases is arranged within a gas-tight housing (12, 13) surrounding the inner line (11) with a spacing. The inner line (11 l ) is assembled of individual sections (15) whereby the length of a section (15) corresponds approximately to the cylinder spacing of the piston internal combustion engine. Each section (15) of the inner line (11) consists of two channel-shaped parts (15a, 15b) which with flanges (18, 19) formed-on at the two longitudinal edges resting one upon the other form between them the line cross section. The flanges (18, 19) of the channel-shaped parts are secured at the surrounding housing (12, 13) by bolts (22, 23). The manufacture of the inner line (11) from sheet metal under avoidance of welded connections permits a particularly economic manufacture and results in a weight-saving type of construction.

    • A saddle for a U-bolt clamp is formed of a pair of tubular housings arranged to receive and slide axially upon the legs of a U-bolt having a semicircular bight, with the housings connected by a web portion consisting of a pair of parallel planar sections of sheet steel welded together in full face contact and extending transversely between the housings integral therewith. The upper (bight facing) edge of each planar section is curved as a semicircular recess on the radius of the U-bolt bight. The mid portion of each planar web section is, for its entire length between the tubular housings, embossed with deep ribs to provide web stiffeners materially reinforcing the entire web portion of the saddle. The lower edge of each web section is formed with an outturned lateral flange over its full length, which flange lies in a plane normal to the longitudinal axes of the tubular housings and additionally reinforces the web section against horizontal distortion and twist when securing nuts threaded on the ends of the U-bolt legs are drawn up against the lower end faces of the tubular housings to tighten the clamp. The flanges add about 50% more metal to the web area at its narrowest point.

    • A silencer device for attenuating fluid borne noise has a flow through housing with an open upstream end for the entrance of a fluid into the housing and a coaxial open downstream end for exhausting the fluid from the housing. An entrance header formed of a plurality of spaced apart intersecting elongated members defining a plurality of rectangular entrance apertures, each elongated member having a V-shaped transverse cross-section shape and oriented with its apex pointed in an upstream direction, is coextensively disposed over the upstream open end. An exhaust header also formed of a plurality of spaced apart intersecting elongated members defining a plurality of rectangular exhaust apertures, each elongated member having a V-shaped transverse cross-section shape and oriented with its apex pointed in a downstream direction, is coextensively disposed over the downstream open end. A plurality of open ended fluid flow tubes having perforated longitudinal walls extends between the entrance header and exhaust header. Each flow tube has one of its open ends in registration with a different one of the rectangular entrance apertures of the entrance header. Likewise, the opposite open end of each flow tube is in registration with a different one of the rectangular exhaust apertures of the exhaust header. The interior of the housing is packed with a sound absorbing material to surround the perforated longitudinal walls of the flow tubes.

    • A system for reducing NO.sub.x gases found in the exhaust stream of the internal combustion engine is provided which includes an internal combustion engine having associated therewith a means for supplying fuel and oxygen to the engine, a manifold system for directing or channeling the exhaust gases from the engine, and a NO.sub.x reducing catalyst assembly communicating with the manifold which includes a housing having a NO.sub.x reducing catalytic structure of apertured thin metal foil positioned therein which includes, in one aspect, a plurality of sheets of expanded metal foil wherein at least one sheet of expanded metal foil has at least some openings therein which are of a different size than at least some openings in a juxtapositioned sheet of expanded metal foil. In another aspect, it includes a sheet of expanded metal foil having at least some openings of different sizes.
