    • A housing (2) for an exhaust gas-treating device (1) of an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes a jacket (6) closed in the circumferential direction for mounting at least one exhaust gas-treating element (5. The housing (2) can be connected to another component of the exhaust system. A simplified manufacture is achieved if the jacket (6) and the at least one ring body (8, 9) are manufactured from a single sheet steel billet (10) by rolling the sheet steel billet (10) in the circumferential direction and by connecting abutting edges (11) of the sheet steel billet (10). The jacket (6) and the at least one ring body (8, 9) differ from one another by different materials and/or different wall thicknesses (12, 13, 14).

    • A loose packing material for the muffler of an internal combustion engine is confined by a mesh, for handling the loose packing as a unit during assembly of the muffler. The openwork nature of the mesh is such that the mesh does not affect the sound or tune of the muffler, such that the original sound of the muffler is the same as its long term sound. The mesh can comprise fiberglass or metal mesh, but preferably includes a heat consumable material such as a thermoplastic polymer. The mesh can be formed as a wholly or partly closed bag with a shape complementary to a muffler cavity, which can be irregular. The heat consumable type of bag is formed by heat sealed seams. The mesh holds the loose packing material clear of peripheral seams or internal points at which structural parts of the muffler are intended to abut. The confined packing and its methods are particularly apt for stamped plate mufflers and are likewise applicable to other forms such as rolled casing and extruded casing muffler structures.

    • A double-walled housing, in particular for exhaust gas catalytic converters of motor vehicles, includes an inner jacket and an outer jacket approximately concentrically surrounding and spaced apart from the inner jacket. The inner and outer jackets rest tightly against one another at both end surfaces. The inner jacket is kept under compressive strain at least at two end regions by constrictions of the outer jacket. The outer jacket has embossed features oriented toward the inner jacket. The housing is produced by deforming the inner jacket by rolling a metal sheet into cylindrical or conical form while maintaining a parting line. The outer jacket is deformed by rolling a metal sheet into cylindrical or conical form and by connecting mutually meeting edges by a joining technique. The inner jacket is disposed in the outer jacket and the outer jacket is plastically deformed inward over its entire circumference on both end surfaces in such a way that the inner jacket is kept under compressive strain. The outer jacket is provided beforehand or simultaneously with embossed features oriented toward the inner jacket.

    • A muffler for use on an internal combustion engine includes an enclosure generally cylindrical and having end plates for closing the internal volume of the enclosure, at least one partition plate for dividing the internal volume of the enclosure into at least two chambers, an inlet tube, supported by one of said end plates and at least one partition plate, for conducting combustion gases supplied from the engine to one of the chambers; an outlet tube, supported by the other of the end plates and at least one partition plate, for blowing out the gases from remaining one of the chambers; and a connecting tube supported by said at least one partition plate for interconnecting the volume of adjacent ones of the chambers. At least two of the inlet, outlet and connecting tubes are integrally made of a single sheet of metal shaped to form a combination tube including the at least two tubes. A method of manufacturing such a combination tube is also provided.
