    • Before being processed in a pneumatic separator or classifier (13), a stream of cut tobacco, travelling to the separator on a conveyor (12), is passed through an opener (11) to open up tangled masses of tobacco that cannot be handled by the separator. The opener comprises carded rollers (1, 2, 3 and 4) having sequentially increasing peripheral velocities. Rollers (1,2 and 4) rotate in the same direction as each other, away from the conveyor, so that tobacco passes over the top of each roller, whereas roller (3) rotates in the opposite direction. The carding pins on rollers (1, 2 and 4) are inclined 5.degree. to the normal, in the direction of rotation. The pins on roller (3) are inclined at 30.degree., also in the direction of rotation, so as to trap the tobacco as it is moved around underside of the roller.

    • Apparatus for separating lighter particles such as lamina containing little or no stem from tobacco particles contained in threshed leaf tobacco which comprises a plurality of tobacco particle separating units, each including a separation chamber each a fan system for establishing a generally upward air flow therein. A tobacco particle projecting mechanism is provided in each chamber for projecting tobacco particles across the generally upward air flow therein with each having structure for directing tobacco particles in cooperating relation therewith to be projected thereby. Mechanisms are provided for receiving the lighter particles carried upwardly by the air flow, the heavier particles moving downwardly within the air flow within each chamber and discharging the particles therefrom. The plurality of tobacco particle separating units are mounted in side-by-side relation in a row which includes an initial end unit and a final end unit with the tobacco particle directing structure of the initial end unit arranged to receive a supply of threshed leaf tobacco and the tobacco particle directing structure of the remaining of the plurality of units being directly connected to receive tobacco particles through a tobacco particle opening in the receiving side of the chamber of the preceding unit so that the tobacco particles projected across the chamber of the preceding unit which move across the air flow therein and pass through the opening form a tobacco particle supply directed to an associated projecting mechanism by an associated tobacco particle directing structure.

    • A conveyor system for moving small particles of material from one location to another includes a flow diverter to divert the flow leaving a first conveyor to a second or third conveyor wherein one of the second or third conveyors is a reject conveyor to remove that material which includes foreign objects therein. The flow diverter is operated in response to a foreign object detection device which is operable in response to material moving along the first conveyor wherein the information obtained from the foreign material detecting device is received in a computer, wherein the computer actuates a piston operated air cylinder to move a perforated sheet member from one location to another so that the flow of material from the first conveyor or any part of the material leaving the first conveyor may be diverted to a reject conveyor.

    • A separator for separating tobacco particles from a tobacco/gas mixture comprises a hood, a circular deflection space disposed in the hood, an inlet for the tobacco/gas mixture to be separated opening tangentially into the circular deflection space, a downwardly directed outlet in the deflection space for the tobacco particles, an outlet for the tobacco particles at the lower end of the hood, and an outlet for the gas above the deflection space. The deflection space is formed by an upwardly closed and downwardly open cylinder; the gas is withdrawn from the hood above the deflection space; the size ratio of the area of the deflection space to the area of the inlet lies between 5 and 30; and the size ratio of the area of the hood to the area of the inlet is greater than 50.

    • Method of and apparatus for sorting tobacco into two groups: a group of satisfactory leaves and a group of unsatisfactory leaves. Tobacco leaves, spaced so that they pass one by one along a conveyor, travel through a zone illuminated by pulsed polychromatic light and an optical sensor receiving light reflected from the tobacco leaves. In a manner which is synchronous with the pulsations of light there is measured the quantity of the light reflected by each of the leaves in the green, orange, red, and infrared areas of the spectrum. Sums are formed from the values corresponding to the reflected light in such areas of the spectrum and relations are obtained between sums corresponding to the green and orange as well as to the red and infrared ranges, of time in which the value of the reflected light in the infrared area is greater than a value preliminarily preset by the operator. When in such time a number of measurements greater than the preset value is reached or when the relations of the sums are outside preset limits, a decision is made to eliminate the leaves which give rise to such measurements. The apparatus eliminates all but a single layer of longitudinally spaced tobacco leaves thereon, and removes the leaves from the conveyor and blows them in virtually free travel through the air to a sorter in the form of a pneumatic unit.

    • An end plate assembly for use in tobacco sorting apparatus having a conveyor having a forward end and a sensing system mounted above the forward end of said conveyor. The end plate is spaced below the sensing system in operative position adjacent the forward end of the conveyor and is mounted at the lower end of a pair of arm members. The arms are pivotally mounted to the conveyor frame to permit the plate to swing away from the forward end of the conveyor. Spring means biases at least one of the arm members toward the forward end of the conveyor to maintain the end plate in operative position.
