    • Apparatus for separating particles contained in threshed leaf tobacco includes a plurality of separating chambers, each including a separation chamber and having a fan system for establishing a generally upward air flow. A covered, high speed conveyor of projects the tobacco across the upward flow of air in each chamber in conjunction with additional make up air from the covered, high speed conveyor. Lighter particles of tobacco are carried upward and exit the chamber via a separating mechanism. Heavier particles of tobacco fall onto an integral conveyor and are discharged from the chamber onto another covered, high speed conveyor connecting it to the next chamber. The separating chambers are mounted in line in a configuration to suit the tobacco being processed.

    • A method and apparatus for processing tobacco, in which tobacco leaves are threshed to form a mixture of free lamina, clean stem pieces from which lamina has been completely or substantially completely removed and uncleaned stem pieces which have useful pieces of lamina attached thereto. This mixture is sifted to separate the clean stem pieces from the unclean stem pieces. The unclean stem pieces are subjected to additional threshing by recycling the unclean stem pieces to the thresher. A sieve may be used to carry out the method and as a part of the apparatus.

    • Intermixed light leaf and heavy stem tobacco particles are fed or propelled inwardly and across a vertical separator chamber of the classifier while forced air is directed upwardly through the intermixed particles and at varying velocities across the length of the separator chamber to gently separate the leaf particles from the heavier stem particles. The stream of intermixed particles is projected across the separator chamber at a variable initial velocity and the varying velocities of the upwardly directed forced air streams are correlated with the velocity of the stream of particles being fed across the separator chamber to gently separate the light leaf particles from the heavier stem particles. An adjustable deflector plate is supported adjacent the inlet feed for varying the angular position of the feeding of the stream of intermixed particles across the separator chamber to thereby vary the classifying plane in which the particles are projected across the separator chamber. A set of air pattern screens, with openings of different sizes therein, is provided for easy insertion and removal of the individual air pattern screens in the separator chamber to control the amount of forced air which passes upwardly through the separator chamber.

An air diffusion granting assembly below the inclined perforated plate member receives air discharged from a fan and has a plurality of directional vanes for reducing air flow and velocity in selected portions of the separating chamber. Air discharge openings are located at a vertical position above the level of the impeller to provide air flow therethrough into the chamber in zones located above the height of such openings.

    • A new system for controlling the proportion of leaf vein in a tobacco raw material treating process is provided. In general, the process involves feeding a raw leaf tobacco to a humidity controller to impart thereto moisture and temperature necessary for the removal of leaf vein, then peeling off the leaf tobacco into lamina and leaf vein by leaf vein removing means and subsequently separating the lamina and leaf vein from each other by winnowing means. The new system includes means for measuring the flow rate of the raw leaf tobacco; means for measuring the moisture content of the leaf tobacco moistened by said humidity controller; sampling switching means for selecting by switching the lamina from which winnowing means in said raw material treating process is to be sampled for measuring the proportion of leaf vein; means for measuring the proportion of leaf vein in the lamina samples by said sampling switching means; and arithmetic controller means for inputting the results of measurement from said flow rate measuring means and said moisture content measuring means, calculating an optimum air velocity for the winnowing means in said raw material treating process so that the proportion of leaf vein is within the range of a preset value and controlling the winnowing means on the basis of the calculated value, and at the same time inputting as a feedback signal the result of measurement from said leaf vein proportion measuring means and correcting said calculated value in accordance with said feedback signal.
